Growing

Today we were driving along and passed the farm near our house that often has sheep roaming the fields. A few weeks ago, we noticed several teeny baby lambs, and we always look for them when we drive by.

Today when we went by, the sheep were out. I said to D, “Look at all the sheep out today!”

He took a look and said after a minute, “I don’t see the babies.”

I took another look and realized that in just a few short weeks, those teeny baby lambs had grown and were now just little lambs. So I explained how they had been growing and they aren’t as little as they used to be, that the smaller sheep he saw were those baby lambs. I said, “Don’t you remember how little R was just a few months ago? And now she is a big baby.”

A few minutes went by, and then out of the blue D said, “So are we growing and don’t even know it?”

I said, “Yes! Exactly. You are growing all the time, but it happens so slowly you don’t even notice.” Then I pointed out that we are not all growing, Mommy and Daddy aren’t growing anymore.

He was surprised by this. “Why not?” he asked. I explained that when you get to be a grown-up, you stop growing. He seemed satisfied by this.

Isn’t it funny, though, the things we as adults take for granted, but children don’t realize until we explain it to them. I guess he thought we keep growing forever!

“I like nurses.”

So I’m sitting in the rocker nursing R.  C is playing nearby.  She looks up and says, “I want to nurse R.”

A bit taken aback, I said, “Well.  You can nurse your dollies, but you can’t nurse R.”

“Why?” asks C.

I thought a moment. “Well, your b–bs don’t have milk. Only Mommy’s b–bs have milk.” (Yes, I use the word b–b with my three-year-old. I hate technical terminology.)

Without a moment’s hesitation, C announces indignantly, “I have peetend milk in my b–bs!”

I’m hardly able to contain my laughter.  I try to control my giggles.

Then a moment later she says, “I like nurses.  Mommy, when I was a baby, did I eat your nurses?”

I give up.  I’m howling, tears are streaming down my face.

C, quizzically, “What, Mommy?”

“Yes, honey,” I reply, “you sure did.”

“Deese Teef”

So this morning C had on a clean white shirt, and before I knew it, there was a brown smudge across her tummy.

I took a look and immediately knew she had wiped her chocolate milk-stained mouth on her shirt. I was very annoyed. We’ve talked about this many times so I said sternly, “C, did you wipe your lips on your shirt again?”She looked at me very seriously for a minute, put a finger to her teeth and said slowly and seriously, “No, just deese teef.”

Jumping on the Bandwagon

in Thoughts and Observations

I have to admit, I was really not into blogs when I first heard about them.

Frankly it seemed rather self-centered, the blog.  It seems awfully presumptuous to think that anyone would want to read about my mundane life.  But, as Mark Twain once said, There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility.  Inside of the dullest exterior there is a drama, a comedy and a tragedy.

So. Here I am.  Read along and share the drama, the comedy, the tragedy with me!  Here’s hoping there will be more comedy than tragedy.
