Catch Up

I’ll try to be brief.  Really.  Stop laughing!  Okay, here goes.

Home From Vacation — I’m happy to say, the weather at the beach wasn’t torrential downpours as it was here at home. It wasn’t ideal beach weather either, but we managed to get to the beach most days. We also got an evening at the boardwalk. The cousins all got along great, and my kids were really bummed to leave yesterday.

Baby slept surprisingly well in the room with Hubby, Princess, and me. I was only up a couple times most nights, although one night I think I counted 7 wake-ups between the two girls. *yawwwn*

The trip was marred only by an uninvited guest who walked off with the beer from a cooler on the porch as well as our relatively new digital camera that was in our beach bag, also on the porch. We can only assume they were taken. Jerks.

We arrived home after an unnecessarily long car ride, and all I can say is Home Sweet Home.

New Neighbors — New neighbors moved in across the street  while we were gone, and they have
four boys. Evidently their mom stays at home  (a rarity in our neighborhood) and they have a son Little Guy’s age. They also seem  to like being outside. Our kids are already back and forth all day long and have  become great playmates already. YAY.

Bunco — Last night was our second neighborhood  Bunco game night. I wasn’t Bunco Queen this time, didn’t win anything in fact.  But it was a lot of fun. We’re all getting to know each other better, which is  the point. Well, that and the food.

I found out this morning that one of my neighbors felt left out, I guess she wasn’t officially invited. I feel bad. It  isn’t supposed to be cliquish. Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome. I told  her so, but I think she might still feel awkward about coming. I wish I’d thought to email her before she had to bring it up.

Stuff Portrait Friday — Tomorrow is SPF if anyone is interested in playing. Let me know if you play. I’ll be sitting this one out. Don’t know when we’re replacing our camera. Jerks.

Happy Birthday To Me! — My birthday is coming up. Birthdays aren’t that fun anymore, just a reminder that my metabolism is slowing down and it’s time to start investing in eye cream.

But I’ll use any  excuse to get my girlfriends together, so I am having a “girls night in” at my house to celebrate. Actually, when I mentioned that I was planning this to a  close friend, she told me it was incredibly lame to plan my own birthday and took it upon herself to send out invites and coordinate it even though she’s miserably sick with morning sickness. THANKS LISA!

This Saturday is reserved for a family birthday celebration with Hubby and Kids. Which will prob’ly just amount to pizza delivery and a grocery store cake, seeing as I already have my gift — a gorgeous stainless steel, whisper-quiet dishwasher that Hubby got me last month off of a clearance sale at Sears. Can’t complain about THAT!

Rain, rain, Go away.

Well, the monsoon has arrived here in Eastern PA.  Just in time for our family trip to the beach.  Joy.

We go every year.  It’s family torture tradition with my in-laws.  Just kidding about the torture part.  Really.  It’s always fun.  We look forward to it every year.  In fact, it was on my first family beach vacation that Hubby and I got engaged.  Needless to say, this place holds fond memories.

We’re up to 8 adults and 8 kids now (ages range from 8 months to 15 years).  We stay in a house overlooking the ocean.  It’s a great time for the cousins get reacquainted, and we adults always enjoy visiting and catching up as well.  The days are full of sand, sun and fun on the beach, and after dinner everyone’s competitive energy surfaces for a few rounds of cards.  There’s always lots of food — egg casserole and Paula’s sweet rolls, homemade chex mix and scotcheroos are family traditions.  And we usually get down to the Boardwalk at least once during the week.  Nana treats all the kids to rides, and we end the night with a leisurely stroll and an ice cream cone.

But the rainy days really test my stamina because then we’re all shut inside with the blaring TV and 8 stir-crazy kids.  And right now the weather forecast is quite gloomy.

Stuff Portrait Fridays

I found a new game I’m gonna play. Please play along! When you do, leave a comment to let me know! Here are the rules.

1. Your Drinking Glasses.

These were a gift from my friend and her mother when I hosted her baby shower. I love them and get tons of compliments when I use them. They are virtually indestructable because the glass is so thick so they’ve lasted for years.

2. Your Address book/Stationary (remember that stuff we used BEFORE email?)

I’ve had this address book for ages. I used to replace them frequently because I got sick of all the cross-outs. Then I got smart and started using a pencil. Genius, aren’t I?

3. SOMETHING NEW

There is actually a story behind this print. It wouldn’t have been my first choice (or any choice at all, really.) But when I went to spend a merchandise credit at my favorite gift shop, I came to find out after driving an hour that they had closed. All she could offer me was this rooster print and $5 for my gas. At least I like the frame.

“MAMA”

by Jo-Lynne on June 22, 2006

in Motherhood

I was at the kitchen counter, pouring a cup of coffee, when I heard it.  The sound I’ve been waiting for.  R was sitting in her high chair, and she said clear as day, "Mama."

Of course I squealed and she smiled her biggest smile, thrilled with my attention, and she started in, "Mamama.  Mamama."

I’m so happy!

Sibling Generosity

by Jo-Lynne on June 21, 2006

in Uncategorized

We spent the afternoon at the pool, and Hubby met us there for dinner so we had both cars to take home.  Naturally both of the big kids wanted to go with Paul in the behemoth truck, and he only has one booster in his truck so he didn’t want to take both kids, and I wanted one of them to ride with me to keep Baby happy on the way home.

But both kids were determined to go with Daddy in the truck.  So instead of making an executive decision, Hubby starts in with, "We need someone to offer to ride with mom.  Someone needs to be kind and loving and have a generous spirit" to which Princess immediately chimed in, "Little Guy will!"

A day in the life of a mom.

by Jo-Lynne on June 21, 2006

in A Day in the Life

Well, so far it’s just "a morning in the life" seeing as it’s just 9:30 am.  But I guess when your day starts at 5:30 am, it seems like the day should be  half over at 9:30.

So at 5:30 the baby wakes me. I groggily bring her  into bed and nurse her until she is no longer interested. Then she spends the  next half hour rolling around between the husband and me, talking, kicking,  cooing, kicking, you get the drift. Finally the husband rolls out of bed to  shower and puts R on the floor with some toyswhile I get a few more minutes of shut-eye.

Meanwhile 3-year-old C awakes  and while she is occupying her sister, I manage to stumble into the  bathroom to take care of the necessary potty, teeth, and contact routine. By now  it’s 7am, and I am ready to face the day. After wrestling the nighttime pull-up  off C, and we make our way downstairs.

C requests pancakes.  See prior post. This project takes up a good portion of the next hour. A few  (okay, FIVE, but who’s counting?) pancakes and a cup of coffee later, I am  finally feeling human.

It’s 8am and the baby is acting sleepy. Back  upstairs I try to nurse her down for her nap, but that’s a no go. She is more  interested in filling her diaper, which is always a signal that sleep is not  forthcoming. So with a clean diaper, back downstairs we go.

I opt to  leave kitchen cleanup for later and spend a while on the computer. By 9am,  R is acting really sleepy. I know the sandman is at work. Back upstairs we  go.

On our way up, C requests a puzzle. Now a good mom would come  back down and get the puzzle and get her set up so she will be occupied, but no.  I’m lazy, and I tell her that when I’m done getting R down, I will get her  puzzle. She seems satisfied by that, and I make my way to the baby’s room  prepared to nurse her down to sleep.

It’s dark and quiet in the nursery,  and I relish the few moments of peace and quiet and snuggling with the baby who  is growing and changing way too fast these days.

Then  the next thing I know, BANG! CLATTER! CRASH! WAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! Mommyyyyyyyyy!  Mommyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! CRASH! CLATTER! Mommyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!! R’s eyes pop  open. Startled out of dreamland, she tries to sit up.

Mental head slap.  Is it too much to ask for 5 minutes of peace and quiet? Bad words run through my  brain as I try to decide whether to just give up on the nap and go down and see  what’s up or to wait it out and try to get the baby down and then go deal with  the mayhem.

(Now before you think I’m the worst of moms, and wouldn’t I dash  downstairs the second I hear such a ruckus, and aren’t I worried about a serious  injury after all that noise, you have to know my daughter C. She is a  professional klutz. She rarely if ever has had a serious injury, but she has a  couple dozen falls and minor boo-boos every day, and she is also a drama queen  and makes each incident sound like the world is coming to an end. I can tell by the tone of the "Mommyyyyy!" that she is not seriously  hurt, but upset that her well-laid plans had ended in disaster.)

Then…  CLATTER! CRASH! ALL SORTS OF RUCKUS!!!!!! Mommyyyyyyyy!!!

I give up. This  is obviously a situation for Mommy. Getting up, I start to make my  way towards the stairs, and I hear 6-year-old D coming to the rescue. In his most paternal voice, "It’s okay, C.  Come with me. You can watch me play video games, okay?" I watched from the top of the stairs as he hugged  her and then gently led her out of the playroom (out of the clutter of puzzle  boards and puzzle pieces which were obviously the result of all the chaos as she  tried to pull them down by herself off a high shelf).

With peace and  harmony restored, I returned to the nursery to finish putting the baby to sleep.  Fortunately she was so tired that not even the ruckus from a few moments ago was  enough to disturb her quest for sleep, and after a few minutes of rocking she  was ready for her crib.

I once  again opted for the computer (and a second cup of coffee) over cleaning the  kitchen. Which means now the kitchen still awaits, we are all still in our  pajamas, and it is now 10am.

C is on her second breakfast,  another plate of pancakes, and D is in the living room playing whatever  creative game that little boys do (it sounds more like a herd of elephants than  a single 40-pound 6-year-old in imaginative play). R is still blissfully  asleep in her crib upstairs. I guess it’s time to start my day!

A Brag Post

June 19, 2006

I have to brag about my son.  First, if you don’t know already, I am the most untalented and uncoordinated person when it comes to sports.  So I just do not have the capacity to imagine actually looking forward to an event such as Field Day (I spent the entire day avoiding as many events [...]

Why One Should Never Take Three Children Six and Under to a Pool Party

June 15, 2006

D’s former kindergarten class was having an end-of-year pool party and invited us to join them, which I originally thought was kind and thoughtful. I realized too late — meaning after I already got the kids’ hopes up for going — that it was probably not the most relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Boy [...]

Night Terrors and a Sappy Mommy Moment

June 13, 2006

I think the other night C had what is called a "night terror".  I had heard about these, but never really experienced one.  Until last Sunday night.  C was sleeping between DH and me in our bed.  Out of a sound sleep, I was awoken by the screaming and flailing of 3-year-old limbs.  I immediately [...]

7 things I say often or every day.

June 13, 2006

I saw this on another blog.  Since I’m sort of at a loss of anything to talk about today, I thought I’d do this.
1. Use your words. (To 3-y/o C who prefers whining as her primary method of communication.)
2. I haven’t had my morning coffee yet! (To the bazillions of requests and demands I get [...]
