Last night Hub and I went on a date for the first time in, well, I can’t even remember our last one. I ordered filet mignon, mashed potatoes, and a glass of red wine – my very favorite meal EVAH.
Of course I committed a cardinal sin and ordered the filet cooked well-done. Hub could just die every time I do this. Yes, people, I am aware filet is supposed to be eaten medium-rare. But personally, I prefer the cow to be slaughtered before it reaches my plate, thankyouverymuch, not when I pierce it with a fork and that blood-red juice oozes out and soaks everything else on my plate. Mmmmm… bloody mashed potatoes.
So my fully cooked steak was absolutely delicious, as were the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. And we drank wine from a bottle with an actual cork. Yeah, I know I need to get out more. The atmosphere was lovely too — a cozy old inn with fireplaces in every room, low lighting, and refined wait staff.
We went with another couple, friends that go waaaay back to before we were married. Our dinner was reminiscent of the days when we used to go out to eat together often – back before we accumulated five children collectively. We actually got to speak in complete sentences and finish conversations without countless interruptions. It was glorious.
Afterward we wandered around downtown for a while and then ended up at a bar playing a trivia game, where we came in third place. That was a rather interesting experience, certainly a different crowd from the elegant inn where we ate dinner. Still, it was a fun way to end the evening. AND we came home with a $25 gift certificate for our third placement in the game. But most importantly, the cosmopolitans were delicious.
And you didn’t reach over and cut up the food on anyone else’s plate?
