It’s been a LONG day. My poor li’l brain has been taxed beyond its meager capabilities, and the drive was grueling. The short version is, the nutritional counselor thinks she can help me. But to say that I’m a tad on the skeptical side would be an understatement of epic proportions.
After testing my urine and saliva, she informed me that my adrenals are stressed, my pancreas is weak, my liver is congested, I’m not digesting protein well, and I have a sick colon. Oh, really, is that ALL???
She also said several times that I have "severe digestive issues". (Um, yeah. I think GERD, gastritis, and IBS certainly meet those qualifications.)
Also, a blood test revealed low blood sugar at 61. Of course, I had been fasting for these tests, so I hadn’t had anything to eat besides water since 8am (this was 3pm). Still, she insisted that 61 was far too low, even though I hadn’t eaten in so long. After my tests, she gave me pretzels to munch on so I wouldn’t faint dead away. Pretzels made with spelt flour, that is. ‘Cause gluten is the antichrist, dontcha know.
Also, based upon nothing more than my blood type, she provided me with a list of foods to avoid and a list of foods that are particularly beneficial, as well as a copy of this book to borrow.
She spent most of the meeting telling me repeatedly that she wants to get my digestive tract working and that she is going to get me healthy. It turned out, the way she plans to accomplish this monumental task is by recommending a slew of supplements that, you guessed it, she sells out of her office. Hmmm. Wonder what the mark-up is on those.
Against my better judgment, I left her office laden down with
a heavy bag full of nutritional supplements and a much lighter wallet.
Upon arriving home, I went right to my friend Google, where I was horrified to find this.
YES, gullible IS in the dictionary.
What I’m wondering is, even if the method is questionable, could the supplements she recommended still be helpful for what ails me? Since I invested half my life savings in their healing powers, I think I might just go ahead and give them a try for the heck of it. What do I have to lose?
I welcome any thoughts you dear internets might have for me. I know some of you are much more informed about a holistic approach to healthcare than I. Which isn’t saying much, seeing how my knowledge of such matters could fit on the head of a pin.
So have I been totally bamboozled or not?
By the way, here’s a list of the supplements she sent home with me. What bothers me more than taking pills is that these are pills I have never heard of. I was expecting a multi-vitamin, and maybe some common supplements like fish oil or St. John’s Wort. But this stuff doesn’t seem like your run-of-the-mill homeopathic supplements. Has anyone heard of any of this stuff?
PaleoFiber, BioDophilus-FOS, IAG, Cat’s Claw, Pan-Ox-5, Chaste Tree, and Adrenal Desiccated.
Phew! That’s quite a list, isn’t it?

Well, first of all Do NOT believe everything you read on Quackwatch!!!! I would definitely give the supplements a try and definitely give this doctor a chance to help you. My friend went to someone very similar with very similar issues as you and she is doing SO much better and (not sure if this will scare you!) she had been infertile and suddenly became pregnant! That’s how “whole” her body became! Also, I just have to say that my own child became seizure-free by DIET alone as meds only made his condition worse. Unfortunately you will not hear much positive press about those things because they are not backed by $Pharmaceuticals$ … yes, supplements will cost some $$ but at least they will not have side effects that will make you have to take another med that might have a side effect that will require you to take another med… etc. I think I’ve ranted far too much here! I think I’m still in shock from Idol! Sorry!!
Steph
I know a lady from a homeschooling forum who is a Christian and knows a lot about “natural healing” etc… I’m sure she would not mind emailing you. Contact me if you are interested.
And I should have added my personal opinion – what have you got to lose by trying it for a little while?
Absolutely 100% give it a shot. You are not gullible, you did what you felt you needed to do to make yourself healthier. Any one of us would have done the same thing.
I hope everything turns out very well for you and that the supplements are EXACTLY what you needed. I’ll be praying for you.
I say give it a shot. Could you really feel any worse?
p.s.
You can discredit ANYTHING via the internet. The site probably doesn’t mean anything.
I agree…give it a shot. I know it’s hard to decipher real and imaginary in new territory, but a there are good sources out there and the more you dig in and talk to others with experience, the more you will be able to see what it’s all about.
And, you know, what she said about gluten, well that might be a big one to think on. I have a couple of friends who are celiac (intolerant to gluten in a BIG way), and by eliminating it their entire health changed. (See celiac.com for more.) I will be researching this myself to possibly try with my son this summer…
Keep us posted…I’m very interested to hear what you find!
I’m a celiac….
So no gluten for me, which, yes, to put it bluntly… sucks… however, i feel so much better when I eliminate it…
and the gluten free stuff they have now is 10x better than 5 years ago when I was diagnosed. And celiac is often misdiagnosed as IBS…
Try the supplements… you have nothing to lose…
let us know how it goes!
For what it’s worth, I have been tested for celiac (as well as a slew of other serious stuff) so I know I don’t have an official allergy to gluten. However, I do think this food toxitity (Immuno 1 Bloodprint) thing might be something to look into.
OMG… You know where I stand on this… Remember cocaine is natural…I’d at least recommend trying only one supplement at a time, for about a week alone, then add one, rather than combining all of those DRUGS at once… Hope not to read about you in the Salem Times & Register. I’m worried, so keep us posted.
Be careful! My hubby the Nurse says that Supplements are not investigated or approved by the Food and Drug Administration, therefore pretty much anything could be in those pills.
Also, if you have issues with your Liver or Kidneys then it might not be in their best interest to have them work double time with all the new crap they have to filter through – ya know?
I don’t know. I just want you to be careful.
Jamie
