Throwback1

As promised

Senior Prom 1990

Prom3_2

My mom took this picture in our family room before we headed off to prom.  (Thanks for cutting off our feet, Mom!)

Once again, 80s fashion leaves us shaking our heads in disbelief.  Whoever decided that plastering a huge bow on the on the hip was a good look should be hung by his toenails.  And the curly perm should be outlawed, wouldn’t you say?

If only the dress had been a graceful floor length instead of the awkward "tea length", and sans bow, of course, it might not have been so bad.  Of course, iridescent taffeta is another unfortunate product of the 80s that should never have been more than a fleeting thought in someone’s twisted mind.  Ditto for whoever invented coattails, although at least they have stood the test of time.  Unlike iridescent taffeta, which looks like it should disintegrate at the mere mention of water.

Fortunately my memories of prom are far more pleasant than the pictures suggest.

Graduation Day 1990

This is the only picture I could find that shows my dress.  I’m sure my mother has more.  But you get the drift.  It’s a vast improvement over my prom dress, wouldn’t you say?

I remember that I had just lost 10 pounds and was delighted to buy this dress in a size 8.  And that was before the age of vanity sizing.  Unfortunately I went away to college a few months later and promptly put on the freshman five fifteen, so I don’t think this dress got much wear.  It’s a nice memory, though!

Great pictures!! You are so right with the iridescent taffeta – whose thought was that and why did it become legal? You made it work, though!

I love your graduation dress! It was very simple and elegant, especially for 1990! You were ahead of your time with that one! :)

Happy TT! :)

hee hee – i had a bridesmaid’s dress like that. in purple. ewwwwwwwwwwww

that’s the price of being “fashionable” though. sometimes when you try to be hip and with-it, you end up looking silly years later :-)

Have you seen prom dresses from this year? The taffeta and the poofiness are back. Scary…

Oh, those are classics!

Y’all look so happy and in love, too! Hee hee. Hold those shoulders back, girl! Be proud! You’re looking hotter’n a hundred years of the Mexican sun! And yes, the white dress for graduation was lovely. It had shoulderpads, no? Because, afterall, it WAS the 80s.

14 Shana July 26, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Fun pictures!!! Gotta love those late ’80 early ’90 fashions.

You know, a bow might have spiffed that prom dress up a bit.

16 SIngForHim@Real Life July 26, 2007 at 2:52 pm

I so remember the early 90s prom days, the shinier the better for dresses, and for hair, the bigger the better! I’m tempted to burn the curly perm pictures of myself!

17 oh amanda July 26, 2007 at 2:53 pm

I don’t know you look pretty hot in incandescent green! Plus, wouldn’t your daughter think she was a princess in that right now?!

18 Lawanda July 26, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Oh I love your graduation dress. I have a family pic right after Kela was born in my graduation dress. It also doubled for my banquet dress. (My family/church do not do proms, so we attend huge teenage banquets given by our parents) :)

19 MomOf3 July 26, 2007 at 3:53 pm

How fun! The 80′s may have been fashionably questionable but they sure were fun! You two look so happy!

20 Lori July 26, 2007 at 4:08 pm

I had that same color dress as a bridesmaid, but picture the big puffy sleeves right at the shoulder instead…yikes!!

21 dcrmom July 26, 2007 at 4:37 pm

Yall are so funny. I guess we were happy. But I remember feeling SO awkward. I mean, could the pose have been any more stilted???

22 teresa July 26, 2007 at 5:54 pm

I love these pictures. I wore a bridesmaid dress just like this….except the bow was bigger and across my butt!

23 Christie July 26, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Oh, the 80s were a riot. We’ve all got books full of pics with perms, bad dresses, and even scarier makeup (at least I do anyway!). Love it! Thanks for sharing.

24 midlife mom July 26, 2007 at 9:45 pm

I love the pictures! The one in the prom dress is so cute, gotta love that bow!

Yes, I did take that picture of Noodles out back in the honeysuckle bush. Isn’t he photogenic?!

25 Faerylandmom July 27, 2007 at 12:58 am

I am sooo glad I went to high school in the late 90′s! (No offense, of course, lol) Not…that…my clothes were any better, though. :-) And yes, your graduation dress is actually quite flattering. Very grown-up. :-)

26 Ann July 29, 2007 at 3:58 am

Fun! We are so close in age. I graduated in 1989. Bring back big haired memories. *sigh*
