Fashion Question of the Week

Simone says:  I want to buy a pair of flat, above the
ankle boots for a casual/night out look… what do I wear for pants?

I say: First of all, CUTE BOOTS!  Second of all, hmmmm.  I’m sure a bootleg jean (or khaki or corduroy, for that matter) would look great with those.

But if you want to show off the detail of the buckle and all, a casual skirt would be a nice alternative.  I’m thinking denim or corduroy.  But the height of the boot is sort of between the "ankle boot" and the "knee-high boot" so that makes choosing a skirt dicey.

Maybe a denim skirt that’s slightly swingy and hits right below the knee?  I read recently that you always want some leg showing between the top of the boot and the bottom of the skirt.  (Although a longer skirt that comes down over the top of the boot would be nice too, I’d think.  You just wouldn’t want the skirt and the top of the boot to meet right at the same spot.)

I think it’s time to elicit the help of the Internets.

What do YOU say?  What should Simone wear with her new boots?

And while we’re on the topic of boots…

I know I promised a picture of the boots I got for Christmas.  And yall may wonder why I got dear Nicky Nikkon back last Friday and STILL haven’t gotten around to posting a picture.

Although I’m guessing that you probably have more fascinating things to wonder about.  But that’s just a hunch.

Well, here’s the deal.  I’ve been deciding.  And that takes me a while, the deciding thing.

You see, I detest being cold.  And everywhere I go I see those cozy UGGs walking around.  And despite the fact that when they made their appearance a few years ago I thought they were clunky and frumpy and basically unflattering and dismissed them without a second thought, they’ve been, well, growing on me I guess you could say.  Honestly, they just look SO comfortable.  And warm.

So I nagged asked my Husband for these knockoffs for Christmas.

Yes, they’re cozy and comfy, (and oh-so-warm) but I feel sorta like a kid playing dress-up.  Except it’s more like a grownup playing dress-down.  You know what I mean.

So then I found these.  Which I thought I was going to like better.

They came in the mail yesterday, and I eagerly pulled them out of the box and tried them on.  But I’m afraid I felt more like a fashion victim than a fashion maven.  In fact, I think the whole tuck-your-jeans-in-your-boots trend is one I should just sit out.  I mean, I know they’re "riding boots" and all, but I didn’t bargain for the "saddle bags" that come along with them.

And that’s basically my long rambly way of saying, I do believe the boots are going back.

You know what, Jenn, that’s what I was thinking when I read that advice. I like boots under long skirts (boots that go up higher than the hem of the skirts). Unfortunately I don’t HAVE any long skirts. And I wanted some casual boots to go with jeans to run around after my kids.

As for Simone, I think a long skirt such as you describe would work with her boots as another option.

I like Simone’s boots and I like the first pair you are wearing. As far as the second pair, they are cute too but maybe you need to go shopping for just the right outfit to go with them. I think that’s probably the best solution.

OK, so maybe I’m not a fashion maven but I usually don’t care for the boots then leg then skirt look – however, a swingy skirt from denim, corduroy, moleskin, etc… anything that isn’t springy or summery – a flared, a-line, or six-gored skirt etc… that fell slightly above the ankle would be very cute and if worn with tights and the brown boots or the other boots would be nice and warm – I do it all the time, practically all winter long – stay warm and get compliments, – What more could you want? The other thing that looks nice is a long straight denim or corduroy skirt that hits just above the ankle. Coldwater Creek normally has lots of things that would work nicely – like this denim skirt for example: http://www.coldwatercreek.com/products/product.aspx?productid=33977&ensembleid=39089

i do like the first pair on you, quite a bit, actually. and the 2nd pair, well, i like them okay with the jeans, but yeah, not with the skirt.

i saw a really cute skirt the other day at Eddie Bauer that i think would be adorable with boots, but i’m not sure if the color would match Simone’s?

um, okay, nevermind? this totally isn’t the one i was looking at. the other one had a bunch of gores in it, and it was slightly below the knee. hmph. but this one is cute too! unless it looks on real people as bad as it looks on the model in the cassis color option…

I think a flowing denium skirt with go with the second pair nicely. I never have the guts to make a purchase like that when I dont know how to wear them or what with. Im glad you like them.. I think you made good choices!

  7. Oh, but I like those second boots! Find something to wear with them. They’re too cute to let go. You need them! Regarding Simone’s boots, I think you got your advice right. I’d avoid clothing with any sortof nod to a Western theme, so she won’t come off like Annie Oakley, but other than that, jeans, cords or a cute skirt would be quite cute.

Really? We have to show leg between the skirt and the boot? I have one pair of boots that come up to my lower calf, and I hate the way my outfit looks if there is space between my skirt and the top of the boot…as if I didn’t have a fashion clue. Hmmm…

    Love Simone’s boots!

I’m not a huge fan of the boots shown here–I just don’t get the look right. However, there is a pair of flat, casual leather boots from Michelle D (my favorite brand again) that I think would be perfect with jeans and skirts and chasing after the kids, since there is no heel. I will go find them and try to give you a link.

I am pretty fashion challenged, but I do have one big opinion about boots. Please don’t wear them with capris! My cousin does this and I just think it looks ridiculous! Just my two cents.

  11. Laura/DaPFG says:

oh, and p.s. the skirt i was looking for was ALSO a cord skirt. just not THAT cord skirt :P

  12. jen says:

I love boots but have a hard time finding what I like on me…..I liked the first ones.

  13. girlymama says:

I think she should buy your new boots.

  14. I really love my Uggs, which is why they made my list of things I love lately. They are super comfy and warm on these super cold days. I have not tucked them in at all, but wear them under my bootcut or wideleg jeans. I was thinking of trying the whole tuck in look, but I am a pear shape and not sure that it would look so great.

  15. Yeah, I love the boots tucked into the jeans look. Unfortunately, the only time I feel okay going for that look is when I’m pregnant. The belly makes me more adventurous I guess. Though I thought they looked cute on you, I probably would have gone for the money in the bank too. I’d also probably spend it again within week!

  16. I LOVE the boots. But I love boots. And aren’t you just the cutest thing. I woudl keep both! Love your blog. I am playing along to your questionarre’s…
