Kindergarten

I've added a few new features to Musings of a Housewife that I hope will be helpful. Over the weekend I created a Whole Foods Resources page that is a great place to start if you are interested in learning more about the whole foods lifestyle. I also compiled my design tutorials into one convenient location. Both are linked in my nav bar. And there is now a Print Friendly button at the bottom of each post, should you feel like printing recipes or information for future reference. Before printing, you will have the option to delete any photos or content you don't need.

I got an interesting call last week.  Someone from our elementary school called to get my thoughts on a whole-day kindergarten option. 

Right now our school district only offers half-day kindergarten, either morning or afternoon.  This is a big commitment for the family chauffeur (in our case, that’s moi) because the buses do not run at mid-day, so when you have a child in kindergarten, you have to drop them off (for afternoon kindergarten) or pick them up (for morning kindergarten) right smack-dab in the middle of your day.  This has a way of complicating matters when you want to meet a friend for lunch or spend the day at the mall — important things.

We moved here when my son was in kindergarten, and I was horrified to learn of the half-day-only program.  I was moving 45 minutes away from my social life, which was significant at the time, (my, how times have changed) and I had been planning on visiting my old friends during the day when my son was in school.

Unlike preschool, where they have childcare available after school hours, the public kindergarten offers no such perks (unless you register for the daycare program, which requires more of a commitment than I need).  So basically, I was living on a pretty short leash that year.

What I’m trying to say, in my charming roundabout sort of way, is that if I had been offered a full-day kindergarten option at that time in my life, I would have been all over it.

So when I received the call last week asking if I might be interested in a full-day kindergarten option for my 5-year-old daughter next year, I jumped on it with both feet.  Right?

WRONG.

I chuckled and told the lady my story.  And I concluded that, ironically, now I am not so interested in this possibility.

Is sticking close to home so that I can pick up my daughter at 11:15 every day going to be inconvenient?  You bet.  But am I willing to put her in school until 3:00 every day so that I can have my freedom?  Nope.  Not anymore.

My reasons are two-fold.  For one thing, my daughter is not like my son was at this age.  I think he would have handled full-day kindergarten just fine, although we did enjoy our lazy schedule that year.  (He went to afternoon kindergarten, and my girls were not in school at all, so we were able to sleep in and hang out until I drove him to school at 12:30 every day.) 

My daughter is not wired the same way.  She currently attends preschool five mornings a week, and I think it’s too much for her.  Many days she asks to stay home.  I regret putting her in all five days and probably won’t make that same choice when it’s time to enroll my youngest daughter in preschool.

But also.  When my son was five, I didn’t yet fully grasp the concept of how fast they grow up.  As my son heads to third grade next year (*faints*) and my youngest daughter bids farewell to the terrific twos (they really aren’t so terrible!) and my oldest daughter heads off to kindergarten (GAH!!), I am simply not ready to part with her all day, every day.  So half-day kindergarten it is for us.

Fortunately, this time around, I know several neighborhood moms who have children going to kindergarten next year, who hopefully will be able to help me out if I need care for my daughter after school on occasion.  But for the most part, I won’t be running around as much as I do now.  I will definitely miss the after-school-care that the preschool offers.  It’s on an as-needed basis, which is SO convenient for me.  But all good things must come to an end, as they say.  The all-powerful, all-knowing they.

Perhaps I’ll get more housework done when I’m home more often.   Bwaaahaaahaaaa…

Fashion Question(s) of the Week

When I was cleaning house blog last night, I came across several fashion questions that were submitted weeks ago.  Evidently I started answering them but never finished, and they’ve been sitting in my Drafts folder ever since.  You can see why I don’t hold down a "real job" now, can’t you?

To try to catch up before the questions are obsolete, I will double up this week and next.  Because, you know, lives depend on the fashion advice we glean here from the wise and all-knowing internets.

So first.  Jennifer asked about summer sandals.  If I were a responsible blogger and actually had the original email or comment in which this question originated, I would contact Jennifer and ask her what exactly she has in mind, as there are many varieties of sandals.  Think about it.  We live in a nation where there are four hundred ninety-two brands of toilet paper.  So sandals?  That’s a pretty broad classification.

But I am not so easily deterred.  I’m going out on a limb and assuming that we are talking about a casual, practical summer sandal.  I will throw in a few dressier sandals for fun, but I’m mainly focusing on practical, daily wear.  So here you have it.  My top picks for sandals for the summer. 

I don’t skimp on the quality of a sandal that I’m going to wear on a daily basis.  I’m a huge fan of Aersoles for comfortable and cute.  Take a look at these.  They also come in a bright, summery green.

Or how about this one.  I hear this brand is very comfortable.  It comes in lots of colors, but I love this orange.

If you like a bit of heel, these are very cute.  They would go with jeans, skirts, or shorts.

A more affordable option is available at Target, but you may want to invest in extra blister protection.

I don’t know if this qualifies as a sandal, but it sure is cute, and it’s great for those who want something with more support and comfort than a typical sandal.

And finally, you can’t go wrong with a simple slide.  I can’t remember where I found this, but I think it’s a Naturalizer.

As I’m posting these, I realize that I don’t really have an everyday sandal.  I pretty much lived in flip flops all last summer, and when I wanted to look cute, I wore ballet flats.  I think I need to find myself a cute, casual pair of summer sandals.

NyQuil

Isn’t NyQuil supposed to make you sleepy?

So why am I sitting here, bright eyed and bushy tailed, and feeling rather agitated, I might add, two hours after medicating my flu with the trusty green stuff?

It must be that daggum store brand my husband insisted on buying.  "It’s the exact same ingredients," he said.  No.  It is NOT the same.  I’m here to tell you. 

I want my NyQuil. 

Is there a rule against mixing NyQuil and Unisom?

The 21st Century Dad

My husband forwarded this article to me last week.  The timing was ironic, as we had just been discussing how men spend more time with their children nowadays than they used to. 

What do you say?  Do you expect your husband to share equally in the household chores and child responsibilities?  Do you think your husband does more of these domestic tasks than your dad did? 

And what about if you are a stay-at-home mom?  Do you think that should make a difference?  Should you have a larger share of the household tasks since you’re at home all day?
