While I like things uncluttered and tidy, I am not a naturally organized person. My method of cleaning up a space is generally to throw away anything that might not be missed (and sometimes even if it will.) I subscribe to the philosophy that I’d rather purchase it again if I miss it at a later date than see it sit around collecting dust until then.
But some things just cannot be thrown out, so then the question is, what to do with them?
In the wintertime, the bane of my existence (besides the cold and the dry, cracked, flaky skin) is the assortment of gloves and hats and shoes that seem to accumulate and pervade every room my home. When we moved in, I was delighted to have a coat closet in which to stash all this necessary clutter, and I asked my husband if he could install some shelves where I could store baskets to hold it all. As a “temporary measure” I hung one of those canvas sweater organizers in one end of the closet. That was three years ago.
For three winters, I have tried to keep all the gloves, hats, mittens, slippers, and shoes in this hanging shelving unit that swings and sways and sags and basically hurls the contents back out onto the floor. For three winters I have BEGGED for shelves.
Then last week I was at Kim’s house and she showed me how she had picked up this over-the-door-hanging shoe organizer at Target and how perfectly it stashed and organized the gloves, hats, mittens, etc of her four very active children.
And the angels sang as a bright light suddenly appeared overhead.
I wasted NO time running to Target the next day and purchasing the same thing. I wish I had taken time to take a before picture so you could get the full effect, but let me show you the final result:
Isn’t it absolutely GORGEOUS? I’ll give you a moment to bask in the glory.
Not only is this clutter secure instead of falling out all over the place, but by removing the sweater hanger from the hanging rod, I was able to make room for more coats too! Of course, we have way more shoes than can ever fit in that shoe hanger, what with all the gloves and mittens taking up space, so now I need to find some fancy shoe storage device for the bottom of the closet. I’ll gladly take your suggestions.
