It’s Disco Night on American Idol.
Lil Rounds sings, predictably, I Am Every Woman. I like the personality she’s putting into this performance. The vocals are fine, but I’m not sure this is doing anything to establish her signature style. I’m afraid it’s another potpourri performance for Lil. But still, it’s great to see her having fun out there. Randy says it doesn’t show what kind of artist she’s going to be. That’s what I was getting at. The rest of the panel agrees. I feel badly for Lil, but I really don’t think she has what it takes to go much further.
Kris Allen takes on Donna Summer. Alrighty then. Strangely, it’s working for him. THIS is how you take a song and make it your own. Way to keep our interest there at the end. Very fun arrangement. Go Kris! The judges love it too.
Danny takes on September by Earth, Wind & Fire. This is fun but I’m beginning to wonder if he has what it takes to be more than a really good wedding singer. And I hate to say that because I’ve been in Danny’s dugout all season. Vocally, he’s solid every week, but I just don’t think he’s shown the improvement the others have. Evidently I’m missing something because the judges are all over it. Hey, Simon’s actually saying what I’m thinking. Well, no, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “awkward and clumsy” but missing that something special that I keep expecting.
Allison, appropriately, is singing Hot Stuff. Now this is an artist who doesn’t have to do anything but sing the melody in her unmistakable voice and it’s RAWKIN. I can’t imagine being 16 and being so confident in who I am as a vocalist. The judges are giving her all of the accolades she deserves. Go Allison!!!
I love how Adam reinvents his appearance for every performance. This week he’s toning it down and singing If I Can’t Have You. Okay, for the first time this season I am going to say that this was a TAD too theatrical for me in parts. His theatrics haven’t bothered me until tonight. That said, that last note was divine. He seriously does up his game every week.
Matt’s closing the show with Staying Alive — another appropriate song choice. This is the Matt we were hoping for the last couple of weeks. I agree with Kara that it wasn’t brilliant, but it was solid. And yeah, Simon has a point but this was MUCH improved.
Honestly? Tonight? There are not two contestants who should go home.
Oh wait. A scruffy-faced Anoop still has to sing. He’s singing Dim All The Lights. Ouch. It was going well for a while there, but then he upped the tempo and the end really soured the whole song for me. So I’m not going to have such a hard time predicting two contestants to go home.
Bye-bye Lil and Anoop. I think Matt bought himself another week.
Best of the night? I’m giving it to Allison.

I do think that Adam and Allison will probably be the final two…much to my Danny’s dismay. I will be relieved to see Anoop packing. I’ve been trying to send him home for a while!
Yes, girl….I say GOODBYE to Lil and Anoop….it’s time. I LOVED Kris, Adam and Danny! I kinda think the slight downer for Danny is he gets a bit goofy up there when he’s performing an uptempo song. When it’s a ballad he’s spot on, standing still but the dancing is a bit strange. But heavens, there are PEOPLE he could HIRE to help him with that!!! STILL a big fan!!!
I too hope Anoop & Lil go home. Let’s pray shall we?
Bye bye Lil and Anoop.
Best of the night for me was Kris. Go Kris!
And don’t you love the purity and quality of Adam’s voice, even in the midst of the theatrics?
I loved Adam. But then again, I LOVE the Bee Gee’s! I thought everyone else was great except for Lil and then Anoop disappointed me. He wasn’t too bad, but I think he will go home with Lil. I just don’t think Danny is all that great. Enjoyed watching it and reading your review!
I think those are the 2 who will leave tonight as well.
I’m in a toss for the final with Kris (my fav), Adam and Allison.
The judges have been SO blatantly biased this year have you notice there are some contestants they can say no wrong about (even when they have an “off” night) then other contestants they never/rarely say much good to?

Ditto. I’m ready for Lil and Anoop to leave, but I’m worried for Matt. I seriously loved Kris last night. I am so impressed with his progression. I can’t believe you didn’t quote my favorite line of the night, if not the season:
Melting into a pool of Abdul (paraphrased)
Come on Seacrest, that was brilliant.
Hey, I don’t mind the bangs.
I felt bad for Anoop – he KNEW that last note was not good.
Do you think you would have felt that way about Adam if Paula hadn’t been so nutso about his performance?
Kris, again, was awesome.
And I agree about Danny.
Yeah, I wrote that about Adam before the judges spoke. It was that part in the middle when he got REALLY emotional. It kind of was just a TAD too much. JUST a tad.
I was feeling Adam…I love that guy. He’s got an Elvis quality.
Lil, Matt, and Anoop are bottom 3 for me. I’m guessing Matt will stay around, not that I thought he was that great, but just because his supporters were probably out in full force after his near-miss last week.
Adam still eludes me – I just don’t get him. He’s clearly talented, he’s comfortable on the stage, and he seems like a nice guy. But I don’t see the genius there that everyone else seems to see…I just find him annoying.
We picked Lil and Anoop here as well. And we were all right!
I can honestly say that as far as the STYLE of music is concerned, Kris is the only one who would put out the kind of CD that I would go out and buy. And he just gets better every week.
