This week I learned a few helpful tidbits of information.
1. Before throwing oneself in front of oncoming traffic to rescue the life of a wayward neighborhood child, it’s advisable to don knee pads first. And those protective rollerblading gloves might not be such a bad idea either.
What? You want the full story? Heh, I thought you might.
You see, yesterday afternoon, I was out in front of my house, minding my own business, chatting with a friend who was visiting, when I noticed a neighbor’s child, who shall remain nameless unless she chooses to fess up in the comment section, on his bike in the middle of the road. I suggested that he might want to get back on the sidewalk, but he wasn’t buying it. We don’t live on a particularly busy street, so I didn’t force the issue.
But the next thing I knew, I saw a car approaching. I took off sprinting across the yard, in my slippers no less, ready to risk life and limb to save this precious little cherub. Well, I’m here to tell you that risk my limbs is exactly what I did. In fact, they took quite a beating when I lost my balance and started flailing towards the asphalt. I broke the fall with both hands before losing my equilibrium entirely and landing on my left shoulder and knee — the epitome of grace and elegance as always.
The good news is, I made such a spectacle of myself that the approaching car had no choice but to stop and watch in awe and amazement, and yet another precious life was spared. Thank you and amen.
2. Before coloring ones own hair, it’s best to consult a professional. In fact, if you have a friend who is a hairdesser, and you ask her advice, she just might even pay you a house call.
You see, it seems that turning 35 wrecks havoc not only on your metabolism and your skin, as I’ve learned recently, but also on your hair. See what you younger gals have to look forward to? I hope you didn’t stop by here today looking for a ray of sunshine. I got nuttin’ for ya.
So to get to the point, when I read Amy’s advice on home hair coloring, I decided to take the plunge. I wrote down the brand she recommended, and I went to the grocery store. Now, I haven’t a CLUE about how to choose a hair color. Basically I just want to match my own, give it some shine, and maybe cover up those pesky grays that have taken up residence around my forehead.
After debating for about 30 minutes in the hair color aisle with my two daughters doing gymnastics on either side of me, I left with a box of Clairol Natural Instincts in dark brown. The box sat on my kitchen table for about a week, staring at me, mocking me. It knew of my fear. I decided I needed some guidance, so I took the box of hair color to church to seek council. No, not spiritual council, although I’m quite sure that if God has the hairs on my head numbered, He also cares about their color treatment. But it was the advice of a hairdresser that I sought.
She said that she had something perfect for me, and she’d bring it over and put it on for me and show me how to apply it. SCORE!
A few days later, she brought over a tube of “hypershine conditioning color gloss,” sat me down in my kitchen chair, caped me, and applied the treatment. Then she left me with a head full of goop and instructions to wash it out in 30-40 minutes, which I did. I do think it looks shinier and healthier. What I’m really looking for is nothing short of a miracle, but for $25 (and I can get 2 or 3 applications out of that) I can’t complain.
3. What, are you kidding me? Isn’t that enough learning for one week? Yeah, I thought so too.

Ok Ok – I’ll out myself as the mother of the child in the street. Thanks for herding him to the curb. He spent a good deal of time in time out for this.
I hope you are ok! I feel terrible. However I would have liked to have seen your spill so that I could have provided an alternate view of it here in the comment.
Thanks for being a great neighbor.
What a hero!
We need photos of the hair – before and after. I have yet to brave home colouring.
I’m laughing at Kim’s confession and your wisdom this week my friend. LOL.
But I am very interested in this goop that you had applied to your hair. Did it just cover the grays or was it an actual whole hair color? I am turning 39 soon and the lovely gray highlights are becoming a bit more plentiful then I would like. PLEASE enlighten me! LOL.
Pass on your wisdom in a bit more detail for those of us who were sitting here going “Uh, huh. oh I hear ya!”
Hugs to you and I sure do hope you are okay!!!
Kim
Wow. Those sure are some lessons. As my 6-year old would say… you saved the day!!! =)
And how funny that Kim busted out the confession!!!
O.K., do share the brand of that hair goop and where I can buy it. I’m about to go pay $150 to have my hair cut and highlighted today. I’m getting a little tired of paying that much money for partial highlights!
So glad you are okay! Can’t wait to read this on the hair color. I started doing this a couple months ago and have been pretty happy with the results. Always room for improvement, though! Thanks!
I have been coloring my grays since I was 30 (I will be 36 this summer) I do it at the salon – I too am afraid of those boxed ones – but now I am curious about what you got!
Such a hero! Kim sure is lucky to have such a great friend and neighbor!! Her confession is great too.
Hair goop hunh…my sister in law does my hair, and always tells me she will do it for cheap, but no where near as inexpensive as box…
Jan Mary, I didn’t post photos b/c I don’t think you can tell a difference on film. In fact, I’m not entirely sure I can tell a difference at all, lol. But I think it looks better. She told me to get it cut and then we’ll do it again. I guess the dead ends don’t help matters? Go figure.
Kim, it can’t be purchased except by professionals, that’s why I didn’t share the brand. And I’m not really covering gray with it. Mostly it’s for conditioning and shine.
That said, a friend pointed me towards this product, which I would be trying asap if my hairdresser friend hadn’t hooked me up. It’s called Shine Happy by Clairol and it looks like this. http://is.gd/slvQ
If anyone DOES have an in with a hair professional, it’s by Matrix – Prizms.Plus.
So sorry about the mid-street spill! At least it made for some good blog fodder!
And honey, I have been coloring my gray hair since my mid-twenties!! Glad you found someone to help you out! ITs all downhill from here!
I can see myself trying to grab a kid and taking a spill. Hope you are all right. When you get older those falls are a lot harder.
I have been coloring my hair since I was 26 so don’t feel bad you barely have to start now. You still look great!
Wow…you are a hero! Battered and bruised but still a hero!
As for the hair coloring…I get mine cut, colored and highlighted at the salon but my hair grows so fast that I can’t afford to have it done every 4-6 weeks…so I buy the cheap color…Revlon Color Stay for $3.00 and color my roots in between times (I;m nearly 90% gray at 46). I bought a special little bottle that has a comb for a top so you apply the color to the roots and scalp area only. Works perfectly!
I have made the mistake of using a Medium Brown Ashe on bleached hair once….bad idea…very bad idea…I was a silver green! Then I had to go pay someone to fix it and my hair was so badly damamged…each strand stretched like elastic and would then break. It was terrible.

Your neighbors are lucky to have you.
I totally know how you feel – I wear slippers around the house ALL of the time – even when I take the puppy outside – and there’s been a few occasions I’ve had to sprint after him (did you know chasing a puppy only makes him run faster? LOL) well any who…..my family got a good laugh at how I looked “running” in my slippers and falling on my you know what! LOL

I love the haircolor story. I color my hair at home and have had some issues along the way, but once I found a consisitent brand I was golden. Literally!
Just posted a “What I learned” blog entry that I’ll probably read and re-read and wonder if I came off the way I hoped to. One of those uncertain days, I guess.
you are a hero and amazingly fast in your slippers
I’m still learning with the hair color thing. Every once in a while I give up and go professional. But me too – my skin has fallen to crap since I turned 30 – at least I’m trying not to blame baby #3 – and I’ve been growing grays. Blech. So far, I’ve 2 at home treatments, trying to go from Dk. brown – like your color I think – nearly black – to auburn. That is difficult to do! I called Revlon after color #1 did NOTHING to hide the dk brown roots. had to wait 4 more weeks. Just yesterday did, as she said, 2 shades lighter than I want, and now I have some reddish highlights – and DK BROWN ROOTS. Uggg. If only I could make that work – $15 vs. $70. When I’m sick enough of the roots, I’ll be heading back to the salon.
When I colored my hair at home, chunks of it came out in the comb-out. Now, I leave it to the professionals!
Last week I learned the importance of REST.
My goodness, you suffered for your heroism! The same thing probably would have happened to me.
I didn’t post today because I apparently didn’t learn anything last week!
So tell me, did you at least have nice and shiny colored hair before you went sprawling over the pavement in your neighborhood child rescue mission?
I’m with you on the 35 thing. Where is all this grey coming from?? I thought for sure I would have pulled out all my hair before I actually went grey. I s’pose it’s a good thing really, that I’ve still got hair to whine about!
Can I just say I love the way that you tell stories? I could totally picture your heroic life-saving efforts…and I couldn’t help but giggle.
Hooray for a fresh hair look! Isn’t it fun?
I so related to the mental picture of you on the asphalt…been there done that! Scarred knees to prove it!
As for the hair color….my hair is just one chemistry experiment after another!
Be blessed…
Susan
Wow! I am glad the kid is okay.
I am turning 40 this year and thinking of dyeing my hair before then. But I’m scared!
So glad you were there!
I love this site!!!! Way to go, I know I need to spice up my hair color, but I’m sooo consevative. Even though I know there are many home hair coloring products avaible. I just need to jump in!
Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
