This week I learned that if you want to make a crab stuffed flounder, it might be a good idea to make sure the flounder you buy doesn’t have the skin on. D’oh. I had great plans to have a blog post about my gourmet dinner with photos and everything, but BOTH cameras were out of batteries, and then I realized I couldn’t wrap a flounder fillet around the crab stuffing when it had the skin on it, so it was crab TOPPED flounder instead of crab STUFFED flounder, which you might think would work out okay, but notsomuch. Bah humbug.
I also learned that even though your child cries wolf with regularity, it’s still a good idea to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong before ignoring his desperate cries for help. Clearly I’m out of the running for Parent of the Year.
Last night the kids were running around the house, and suddenly we heard weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from the living room. My husband was in a chair in the family room with his laptop, and I was washing dishes. Neither of us so much as looked up. It is simply not unusual to hear that kind of commotion coming from my son, and rarely is there something seriously wrong.
Finally I looked over at my husband, and we shared a look of “Yeah, yeah, whatever,” right before my son called out, “I’m BLEEEEEDIIIING!” Which still didn’t get us moving very quickly. Because, again with the melodrama.
Turns out he had a pretty nasty gash in the palm of his left hand, so the conversation turned from, “Yeah, yeah, whatever,” to “You think he needs stitches?” I mean, it HAS been at least a month since our last visit to the ER. We’re overdue. They might give away our personal room if we don’t frequent them again soon.
After we got my son calmed down, we decided to get a second opinion before wisking him off for an evening of waiting and waiting and waiting and stitches. Turns out, our neighbor is pretty well versed in first aid and was able to use liquid glue and a wrap and save us a trip to the ER.
I hope he doesn’t end up with a nasty scar, but sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons. It’s on the palm of his hand, and he’s a boy, and somehow I don’t think he’s going to suffer any lasting emotional damage from having a scar on the palm of his hand. Naturally my husband’s main concern was missing his baseball games this week. Men. @@
I also learned that it’s a good idea to check one’s DVR setting before the SEASON FINALES of your FAVORITE REALITY TV SHOWS air. I missed three, yes THREE of my favorite shows this week. You’d think I’d have learned my lesson after the first one, but no. I missed last week’s American Idol semi final (that I have found online, thanks to a kind reader, but haven’t had time to watch yet) and then I missed the first hour of the Survivor season finale on Sunday night. Fortunately I discovered the mishap in time to catch the second half and the live reunion show live. THEN last night somehow Dancing with the Stars got preempted for 24, which we don’t record because it’s available on Huloo. So I don’t know WHY it taped instead of DWTS. I’ll have to find a way to stream DWTS tonight before the results show.
None of this would be so remarkable had I not missed a SINGLE EPISODE of any of those shows all season. Why my DVR decided to be temperamental right now at the end of the season, I do not know.
So that’s about it. I’m off to meet girlymama for carbs and coffee this morning. There is a new Panera nearby that we must inaugurate with our presence.
So what did you learn this week?!

Don’t feel bad, my in-laws made my brother-in-law walk around for three days on a broken foot. He had a history of extreme melodrama and they have never lived that one down. I was pretty dramatic, too and my parents waited until the next day when I broke my wrist. It happens.
Around here the plaintive wail is usually along the lines of, “Mo-om! I’m about to bleed!”
Those DVR’s can’t live without em and curse them when we fail! And I am glad you didn’t rush back to the ER but I am so sorry this happened. It stinks…H was limping yesterday saying her foot hurt…I sent her to school like that hoping it was a fake…it was. But had it not been I would have been a REAL HEEL.
We do the same thing with our son. My husband actually had him saying ‘chicks dig scars’ when he was just two. Men!
Good to know about the DVR. We’re debating finally getting it and putting the VCR out to pasture.
I’m glad your son is okay!
Jealous of your breakfast plans. Wish I could join you. I don’t watch any of those shows, so I can offer no tips on finding what you need. Good luck!
I am sorry to hear about David’s hand! Have fun with Melissa!
That’s so nice to have a neighbor who can offer a second opinion. I try to avoid the ER having had my fair share of visits in the past year and that was just with one child! Glad he’s ok.
The DVR is a lifesaver when it works; when it doesn’t, it’s a pain. Thank goodness that most shows are online now.
Did I already ask you this? Where is the new Panera?
Typical for the batteries to run out at these critical moments!
Glad the wound was not more serious. We have such a drama queen here, that usually if there is lots of screaming we reckon it can’t be THAT bad. As my dh (the pediatrician) say – if they can’t scream…that’s when you worry!
My lesson is up – a floral lesson this week!
Melodrama is served up in abundance in our house. Glad your son is okay. The DVR missing shows is one of my least favorite things ever.
I would make a huge effort to watch DWTS. I actually cried a teeny bit.
I don’t want to scare you Jo-Lynne – but dh drilled thru 1/2 of his palm once – so of course we went to the ER – they kept him overnight for IV antibiotics, they said the hand, especially the palm is VERY susceptible to infection when cut – he did NOT want to stay over night for a cut in his hand, but I managed to convince him – so you might want to give your ped a call and see what they think – closing it up with the glue could have locked in germs………….
Again, it may not be the case with your son, but you might want to check.

DVR’s are my particular life challenge at the moment!
Glad I’m not alone!
Susan
Liquid glue? I hope you don’t mean Elmers…hehe!
I hate when my DVR messes things up like that!
With a drama queen in residence, my first question when she starts wailing is: “Are you bleeding?”
That stinks about your DVR, too.
I can totally relate to the crying wolf syndrome.
When we hear a thud coming from the vicinity of my 5 yo it is now immediately followed by “I’m OK” . When I don’t hear that I know to run…fast.
Life sure is full of surprises
We once drove to a doc in the box for possible stitches in a kid’s hand. $50 copay and 2 hours later, we left with a Dermabond (fancy, expensive superglue) application and a lot of gauze.
Your neighbor is a gem! We’re still relatively new in this neighborhood, and I appreciate the idea to scout out which house we can go to when we’ve got a medical calamity. Surely there’s a medical professional nearby…
Good luck catching those finales!
I learned some parenting lessons, and Kyle learned something too!
OMG – we might be twins! We had crab stuffed fish thiis week too, only it didn’t turn out so well. And this is the second week in a row that my satellite signal was out when American Idol was on. YES, I missed the finale. I’m gonna have to watch in online and THEN watch the results, so don’t ruin it for me!
