What I Learned This Week: Who Knew Shopping with Three Kids Could Be So Easy?

in A Day in the Life,What I Learned This Week

what-i-learned-this-week1It’s summertime again, which means the kids are out of school and I no longer have the luxury of running errands alone.  Yesterday we had a delightful morning at the Sun & Earth factory tour organized by two Philly mom bloggers, Beth and Sarah, and then we had a few hours to kill before a dentist appointment for my daughter.  It didn’t make sense to return home in between, so I decided to run into the grocery store.  My kids were not amused by this turn of events, but they went along cooperatively.  I may or may not have bribed them with a box of Lucky Charms — a rare treat in our house.

When we got to the door, my 3-year-old immediately honed in on the cart with the car in front.  I swear, the child has sonar for those things.  I agreed because I knew she was getting tired and heading for a meltdown, and I didn’t want to leave the store empty-handed like I did the last time I had three kids at the grocery store.

She happily climbed in the car, and my older son and daughter flanked the sides, and we paraded into the store, ready for battle.  Soon my son asked to push the cart, and since I hate and despise pushing those carts, I agreed to let him give it a try.  Surprisingly, he did quite well.  And more surprisingly, my other child didn’t put up a fight to push it herself.  She and I walked ahead and chose the items to deposit into the cart.

When we got to the cash register, my son jumped ahead and immediately began unloading the cart while I just stood there and checked email on my Blackberry supervised.  Then as I was paying, he made his way to the end of the conveyor belt and started loading groceries into bags.  The cashier handed me my receipt as my son picked up all four bags and started towards the door.  And that, as they say, was that!

When we got to the car, I lifted the back hatch for my son to set the groceries inside, and I noticed that he had neatly bagged the breads in one bag, the lunchmeat and light-weight items in another bag, and the boxes in another.  Which just goes to prove my philosophy that you can’t teach grocery bagging.  It’s an innate ability.  You have it or you don’t.  (And most professional baggers don’t. Which drives me mad, in case you hadn’t guessed.)

The shopping trip was so successful that I actually decided to drag them into two more stores before we went to the dreaded dentist appointment.

So this week I learned that life actually DOES get easier as the kids get older.  What a relief!

Now I want to know what YOU learned this week!  Here are the carnival rules.

1. Any time this week, publish your What I Learned This Week post on your blog. (It can be one sentence. It can be several paragraphs. It can be a list. It can be an essay.  It can be serious. It can be silly. It can be thoughtful and profound. It can be sarcastic. It can be sentimental. It can be ANYTHING that you learned as long as it is of a family friendly nature.)

2. Within that post, please mention the What I Learned This Week carnival and link to this post.

3. Then link up with the Mr. Linky form down below. (Please only link if you have written a What I Learned This Week post. And please link directly to the carnival post, not the main page of your blog. And finally, please do not put a Mr. Linky on your post. THANKS!)

4. Then visit the other participants and see what they learned this week. And comment, comment, comment! Because we ALL love comments.  Spread the love!

Alrightythen. Ready, Set, GO!

But did you remember your reusable bags?? ;-) I’m glad your shopping was so painless. One day I’m really going to get a post up for What I Learned this Week. When I see them around the blogospere I write the post in my head, but never seem to get it down. I’ll add this to my summer to do list. Have a great day.

Mel, I did! But only in the second store. Sigh… When will I learn?

I let my three year old push the mini-shopping cart by himself for the first time last week. I’m not sure which I prefer – him running over my feet every 29 seconds, or him climbing out of the race car shopping cart ever 49 seconds. I have to keep reminding myself that shopping will get easier (soon??) but sometimes it’s hard! He is impossible to take anywhere right now. It seems to be working for you – how bout you take my little John with you next time??? :)

Kristin, YIKES! She does stay in the car, she loves it that much. I have not allowed the mini-shopping carts though. GADS. :-)

That a relief to hear b/c I just read in my son’s writing journal that he hates going to the store with me. Love that your son bags groceries the right way – I cringe when I watch clerks jam bread next to cans or boxes.

Jen, I’m pretty sure my son would say he hates it too. I guess he just made the best of it! :-)

Bagging is a science. Good thing he learned the fundamentals early!!! He could teach the kids at Foodland in WV a few tricks!

How exciting! I know I still have many years to go until then, but it’s great to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Sorry, Jo-Lynne, Mr. Linky pre-populated and *made* me jump the gun. (It’s all his fault I posted twice, I swear!) Anyhoo…I tried to figure out how to delete the first link (Mylestones), but I’m apparently not that smart.
And can I just tell you that the hope you’ve instilled about grocery shopping w/kids getting easier—it simply made my day! I’m wondering, is your son available tomorrow to accompany me to the grocery store? :-)

What a ‘little man’! Good for him. Kids can do all sorts of things for which we don’t think there are capable!!!

I survive the grocery store with bribes and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

My ecobag arrived yesterday – can’t wait to take it on my next shopping trip. Sadly (or happily, depending on your perspective) that won’t be for about 12 days – no more shopping until we’re in our new house! Thanks, again, for another great giveaway.

Nikki, I’m so glad you like it! I keep forgetting to use mine. @@ But it’s handy in my car. Guess I should shove it in the depths of my purse. Lord knows there’s room. :-)

I am so impressed with D’s packing ability. He could be the bagger everyone looks for someday when he wants a job as a teenager!

My brother had this gift..and worked as a bag-boy when we were younger.

It is much easier to shop now. Boo loves reading me my list and checking things off. Hunter will push or grab things off the shelf.

WOW! I really needed to hear that things get easier since I now have a three year old and a two week old to drag to the store with me. Thanks!

Don’t you love it when things go better than expected. It hasn’t happened for me lately, but we’ll get there some day.

Ah, shopping with many littles is always an adventure, isn’t it? I’m glad to hear that it’s gotten easier for you. With 7 kids, I usually try to take as few of them with me as possible. . .not because of behavior issues, but because we’re constantly being stared at or asked a 100 times, “Are they all yours?” That can really slow a gal down whose on a shopping mission!

The grocery store is so difficult sometimes with my 2-yr-old so I’m very excited to hear that it does get easier. Something to look forward to! Great idea on the carnival btw.
