In my efforts to make as much from scratch as possible, and because I’m always less than impressed with jarred spaghetti sauce, even the gourmet brands, I decided to make my own! I got such a positive response to my granola bar video, I thought I’d video tape my tomato sauce adventure. All those years of watching the Food Network are finally paying off.
Here’s the recipe. I got it from FoodNetwork.com.
Chunky Tomato Sauce
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 medium onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
- 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
In a medium pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and saute for 3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for another 15 minutes.
Serve over pasta, and enjoy!

I have made my own sauce twice in the past month…once out of necessity(I had the pasta boiling and realized I had no sauce…can we say Punt?)and then just last night again because the first time turned out so well!
I do one 14 oz can of petite diced tomatoes and one 14oz can of sauce…and in addition to everything in your recipe, I add some finely diced green pepper, a can of mushrooms (or saute fresh ones with the onion and garlic) and also one tsp of dried oregano. Yum-o!
Love the video. I’m totally inspired. I’ve starting making pizzas at home (I haven’t braved making the dough myself, yet) and I bet that makes an awesome pizza sauce too! Any tips on growing herbs? I’ve tried growing some inside and I just end up killing them.
Melanie, actually, I have had good luck with my herbs. Most are on my deck at the moment, but I had them inside for a while and they were fine there too.
Loving the videos! There’s a website a friend introduced me to some time back that’s been a Godsend in learning more about healthy foods, eating and preparing healthy. It’s http://whfoods.org. One of the things I’ve learned is that to get the most health benefit from onions and garlic is to let them sit for 5 minutes after you’ve chopped/minced/sliced/…

Just wanted to share something back as I’m learning so much from your blog.
Yum! This looks great…and simple! My kind of recipe!
I’m going to try this. By the way, we made the homemade granola bar recipe, and my kids LOVE LOVE LOVE it. (Me too.)
I have published a similar recipe, but with oregano, zucchini, and carrots. You can check it here: quick chunky tomato sauce.
I’ve been making sauce for years. I originally learned from a lady from Capri who gives cooking classes. Instead of using diced tomatoes, I’d recemmend the canned whole plum tommatoes. (San Marzano style.) This makes a huge difference. Just use your potato masher to smash them. Sometimes I add in some capers and kalamata olives and a splash of white wine. Delicious!
Great job! Thanks for sharing!
I need to send TK4 to your house to learn how to make that. When I married a south-Philly Italian, I thought that I would be getting great Italian food (from either him or my MIL). My MIL failed on that front!
Oh, I love homemade sauce but didn’t have a good recipe. Thank you!
I’ve been loving your food posts lately – I’ve honestly been so inspired!
You’re a natural on camera! There’s really no comparison in flavor between homemade tomato sauce and the kind in the jars. I use a Cuisinart Mini-Prep to do the onions and garlic, because I don’t have good knives. You looked like a professional chopping the onion and the herbs! Great video and recipe!
How cute are you!!
Ok, WEIRD. I was just thinking about making meatball sandwiches for dinner tonight and thought “I wish I had a recipe to make MY OWN tomato sauce” and then I clicked onto your site! You are the bees-knees girl!
With these kind of recipes in mind, I have to share a site with you … http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/blog/category/recipes
Her recipes sound SO good and SO healthy! I made my kids the “breakfast cake” and they sang my praises! lol – my next adventure is her Whole Wheat Homemade Waffles & Blueberry syrup!
I totally love your videos. Great job! I too make my own sauce. We do have a vegetable garden so I grow my own. I have never grown herbs though, but have been thinking about it. Can herbs be grown inside during the cold winter months?
Great video, you’re so cute girl! You’ve inspired me to give this a try because it does look pretty easy. My version of making homemade spaghetti sauce was adding Prego to ground beef. But I’m up to adding a few more minutes of time for a healthier alternative.
Christine, I think so. I had them on my window sill for a while, and they did fine. I plan to bring mine in and use them this winter.
Great video! OK- I have to find out the brand of your knives. I’m at your aforementioned point where I hate to chop anything, so please let me know your secret!
Girlfriend, this is soooo professional it could be a food network show! Great job on the video editing, too.
Nell
my mom used to make it when i was a school going girl.. and i used to have everyday the same chunky tomato sauce along with the changing food. Your recepie is a tad different from what my mom used to make… thanks for slight modification i guess it will add wonders to the food of my future kids
Hillary, they are Wustoff. LOVE them. They are an investment, but you don’t need a whole set. I recommend starting with a good chef’s knife. I feel a post in the works…
Look at you. I bet some big TV network is going to offer you a TV cooking show gig soon. Remember me when you’re rich and famous.
P.S. You definitely look like you’re losing weight. Are you? If so, do you think it is related to your new commitment to healthful eating?
You’re too kind. And I’m so not losing weight. I just make sure to put on a shaper before I get on camera. LOL.
