I don’t know when I’ll learn that Momma’s always right. Well, most of the time, anyway.
For the past few years I’ve been complaining about my skin and my nails, and I’ve spent more time and money than I care to count trying different products to combat my weak, peeling nails and dry, rough skin.
When I’d complain to my mom, she would always tell me to consider my diet. She said that what you put IN your body is even more important than what you put ON it, and your skin and nails (and hair) are usually the first to show signs of malnutrition. I said I had a decent diet and I could never remember to take a multi-vitamin, so I kept trying products, hoping to find a miracle cure.
Then I began researching whole foods, and I discovered the benefits of Cod Liver Oil. I decided to try it, hoping that it would help my mood and to prevent osteoporosis, which runs in my family. To be sure I would take it consistently, I put it with my thyroid and gastritis meds in one of those weekly medication organizers — you know, like the one your grandma has sitting on the window sill in her kitchen. Just call me Granny.
My moods actually HAVE been better, but an unexpected bonus is what it’s done for my nails and skin. My nails are suddenly growing like weeds, and they’ve stopped splitting for the most part. My skin is looking better too. I can’t think of anything else that I’m doing that would make such a dramatic difference.
Perhaps when Old Man Winter comes to town and the dry chilly air takes its toll on my body (and my moods), I’ll have to eat my words. But for now, I’m taking my Cod Liver Oil religiously.
What did YOU learn this week??? Here are the carnival rules.

Alrightythen. Ready, Set, GO!

Wow! That is interesting! I’ve been breaking out like a 16 year old lately, maybe I’ll try it!
Oh boy… my Nana used to tell me all about Cod Liver Oil and I never believed her. She had so many silly superstitions and what not. Well, now I know the truth!
That sounds great! Something else to add to my “to do” list. My nails are a mess and my skin leaves something to be desired too!
Do you take your cod liver oil in capsules or tablets or “neat”!
My Dad has a few spoonfuls every day in a glass of orange juice – bleeeaauughhh! Mind you he is 75, still the weight he was when he was married, and can still do head over heels (tumbles?) with his grandkids!
You gotta love good ol’ Cod liver oil! I take it too my friend. I’ll be right over to sit on the front porch in our rockers and talk about old times! LOL
Hugs.
Kim
JanMary, I take the gelcaps. I couldn’t bring myself to do the oil. I was trying to put the oil in the kids’ orange juice, but only the 3-y/o would drink it. I tasted it, and it tasted fine, but the oil on the top gave it away. Dang. I need to get them gelcaps, I guess. I hear they make little bitty ones.
I need to look into those! Gelcaps sound very do-able. Not to sound crass, but. Can you taste it when you burp?
Erin, I don’t have a problem with that at all. It is a complaint by some, so I don’t know if it’s the kind I bought or if I’m just not bothered by fish burps, lol.
My mom swears by the oil. I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet, but perhaps I should because I would love to have longer nails. Glad to hear it is working for you.
I’ve been researching probiotics for the baby, and I’ve been told to give her CLO too. I’ll check that link, but have you come across any mention of giving it to babies? I’m not about to start plopping things in her bottle without knowing what I’m doing!!!
Tiffany, I would definitely check with a doctor first. They do make it specifically for kids, but not sure about babies. I think Nordic Naturals is a well recommended brand.
This link has recommended dosages:

I can always tell when I need more water in my diet, my hair does not do what it is supposed too. It gets dry and nasty. Adding something good to your diet does have wonderful results.
If only we didn’t have to call it COD LIVER oil…
By the way, I linked to you in my post for today (talking about blog design and people who share tips).
Wonder if it would help me? I go through SO much lotion, (I am a nail biter…so that doesn’t matter) but my hair…oh don’t get me started on my hair. I know I need to see a doc about my thyroid…but the thought of taking meds, regulating them etc makes me sick to my stomach. Shame on me. But kudos to you!!!
I clicked on your link “the benefits of cod liver oil” as I was curious what the difference was between that and fish oil. The difference is that the cod liver oil has vitamin D and the fish oil doesn’t, and depending on where you live should determine if you should take the cod liver oil in the summer. Thanks for keeping us informed!
Don’t you just hate it when mom is right, even when you are a mom yourself. lol I will have to check into the CLO I know I need to take something…I just have a horrible memory..guess I’ll join the ranks of grannies out there with pill holders.
Hey Christine. Yeah, I plan to increase my dosage this winter, but for now I’m taking 1/2 the recommended dosage on the bottle, which makes it 1/4 the recommended dosage by the Weston Price site. From what I’ve been reading, we as a nation are horribly vitamin D deficient so I’m not too worried about taking too much at this point.
Ew. But I might give it a try.
Does it come chocolate flavored?
Robyn, actually, I think I DID see some chocolate flavored, lol. I just take the gel tabs and swallow them with water. Easy peasy!
I gave up on hair and nails. I just can’t maintain. So it’s baseball caps and no nails for me! I am so glad that you can!
I’m so glad you found something to help! That is a great tip. For a while I was thinking that you put it ON your nails and skin, but I guess ingesting it would be what you are saying. yes. I see there. You are putting something called Cod, Liver and Oil down your throat. Ok. I see. Sounds lovely.
But whatever works, right?
Yeah for mother know best! I will have to read more about cod liver oil.
I think I saw this on an episode of Little Rascals back in the day.
Well, I’m loving the switch to whole milk so maybe I should look into this cod liver oil thing, too.
Great post! Amazing how all these old “folk remedies” have real science to back them up, huh? My hubby takes CLO capsules to help with his psoriasis.
Great lesson learned. Although I eat a healthy diet, I noticed a huge nail growth and strength difference when I began taking the Vitamin Code “RAW” vitamins – nothing chemical in them, just RAW Food sources.
You know – I think I’m actually going to do that. Will be interesting to see if I notice effects. Even if I don’t, I know it would be good for me. Glad it comes in gel caps!
Well, that does it. This is the third time this week (and it’s only Tuesday) that cod liver oil has come up. I will buy some tomorrow. Maybe it will help my hair. (My nails grow like crazy but my hair has thinned out way too much over the past six or seven years.)
Hmmmm…gonna have to try it:)
Cool carnival!
I might have to start taking fish oil now. Sounds like it does a lot!
Blessings.
