What I Learned This Week

what-i-learned-this-week2This week I’ve learned a few things:

1.  After having a gastric emptying study (which sounds far more disturbing than it actually is) and an abdominal ultrasound (how weird is it to have an ultrasound without being pregnant??) my doctor called to inform me that there was nothing to see in either instance.  Which means that we still don’t know the cause of my tummy troubles, but at least we’ve ruled out two more undesirable diagnoses (namely ulcers and gall stones).

2.  If you break a glass on the sidewalk, a lightweight rechargeable sweeper works fabulously for picking up the finest shards that are left in your wake.  However, a neighbor walking by might look at you kinda funny for vacuuming your sidewalk.

3.  My daughter can go months with a dry pull-up at night, but the first night I run out of pullups and put her to bed in her underwear, she will wet the bed.  And of course this only happens when she is in MY bed.  She never wets HER bed.

4.  HER bed, by the way, is like sleeping on a stone mattress.  I know this because rather than change the sheets on MY bed in the middle of the night, we just migrate to HER bed for the rest of the night.  And also?  It is crowded with two people in a twin bed, even if one only weighs 36 pounds.

5.  And also too?  My Protect-A-Bed (affiliate link) mattress cover is worth its weight in gold.

  1. That’s hilarious that you just migrate to her bed. I’m pretty sure I’d do the same thing!!

  2. Susan says:

Oh my word. I have had the gastric emptying test of which you speak. I had tummy troubles for years and no one could figure it out. We eventually discovered (thank you HIDA scan) that I did not have gallSTONES but instead had a gallbladder that was just really crummy and didn’t work. So if your ultrasound is negative for gallstones, the next logical step is a HIDA scan.

And last, but not least, we discovered extensive endometriosis. I won’t get into gory details here on your comments section, but let’s say I’m really looking forward to December when I have surgery!

  3. Emily B says:

Could possibly be related to your back, too. Have you seen a chiropractor? I went yesterday and she told me my tummy troubles are likely related to a mid back that is very out of alignment. Just a thought to consider.

  4. Sarah says:

I’ve learned way too much for teaching classes this week to bore you all with it so I will refrain from What I Learned this week least I lose readers out of sheer boredom

Speaking of gross stuff, I hear my dog gagging on something and is probably throwing up on my carpet right now. Gotta run!

  5. Michelle says:

My son was vacuuming our driveway this weekend with a shop vac because he broke a lightbulb pulling stuff out of the trunk (we brought it to home depot to make sure we got the right one).

Bed-wetters are tons of fun. 2/3 of my kids wet the bed, way above the statisical average, I guess I am blessed, I mean cursed. I know they will outgrow it but changing and washing wet sheets is no fun. I learned the value of a waterproof mattress cover for myself early on. Even if it only gets peed on once or twice it is worth every penny.

  6. Terra says:

i have been seen vacuming my garage at times (hubby too)

  7. I feel your pain. I was changing sheets last night at 1:30 in the a.m. For the second night in a row. I need to look into you protect a bed peeps.

  8. Kim says:

Okay I had to chuckle at a few of those because I can so see you vacuuming the sidewalk! LOL
I’d help you out and bring out my Swiffer! LOL
    Hugs.

  9. Jennifer says:

Baby Girl somehow managed to leak through her pull up the other night and still got pee on me while I was sleeping. Ugh.

  10. Alison says:

I would totally migrate to my kid’s bed if that happened. My daughter’s bed is more comfortable than mine, though.

And lol at #2. I would wonder if I saw a neighbor vacuuming her sidewalk. Now I know!

  11. Yeugh – the only thing worse than being woken by a kid with a wet bed, is discovering it is YOUR bed that is wet!!

    My lessons are finally up.

  12. I’m sure you did get some funny looks “sweeping” your sidewalk!

The pullup thing happened to me on more than one occasion with Max! Not looking forward to that with Cate in the next months!

  13. Debbie says:

Since I always enjoy learning, I decided to join in for the first time today. I’ve visited other blogs who participated and found myself longing to get involved. Thank you for hosting this meme.

  14. Kara says:

Well, bummer that you don’t have any answers, but good that you’ve ruled out a couple of things. LOL on #2, #3, & #4…I’ve SO BTDT!

  15. Stephanie says:

I completely agree with you about Protect-A-Bed mattress protectors. We have one on every bed in our house. And I am SO glad.

  16. Kellyn says:

I loved the mattress pads when Boo was potty training! Saved us a few times.

I would have looked at you funny too, but now I will remember that for our BBQ’s.

  17. Michele says:

Just curious…what kind of tummy troubles are you having? I have had issues for a few years myself and every test under the sun done at least twice and no one can ever seem to find anything. However, I know I am not making up the pain I feel. So frustrating! Just wondering if what you are suffering with is similar to me.
I enjoy reading your blog too!

    Michele
