What I Learned This Week

in What I Learned This Week

what-i-learned-this-week3Some days just aren’t meant to be lived.  Such as my yesterday.  From the moment my feet hit the floor, everything that could go wrong went wrong.  Remember the day that I had an appointment at my orthodontist and I went to the wrong location?  Yeah.  You’d think a person would learn.  But no.  I did it again yesterday.  I didn’t even bother calling in and asking if I should drive to the other office.  I just chalked it up to a Monday and went to Target.  Hey, it’s cheaper than therapy, right?

Once home, I tried to make bread in my food processor because my mixer doesn’t handle it very well.  (I’m still experimenting, trying to find the perfect sandwich bread recipe and the easiest way to make it.)  Turns out, the food processor can’t handle it either.  After trying unsuccessfully to get it mixed in the mixer, I turned it out onto the counter and kneaded it the old fashioned way.  At least I got some exercise.

Because the bread took so long, the granite guy came to template (let’s pause right here for a YAY!) before I could put my 3-year-old down for her nap, so she was a beast all afternoon.  When the older kids got home from school, her disagreeable mood only escalated.  My 6-year-old walked in the door whining about something.  She went straight to her room until she could come down with a happy demeanor.  Can a 6-year-old get PMS?  I seriously think so.  Of course it was raining so the kids couldn’t play outside, and I finally told them that if I hear “but it’s boring” or “but there’s nothing to do” one more time I was going to sell them all to the zoo.

Later in the day I put a chicken in the oven, but as it turns out, my oven wasn’t heating as high as it said it was.  And when I took the chicken out at 6:00 for dinner, it was underdone.  So while the potatoes and carrots grew cold on the stove, I put the chicken back in the oven for 30 more minutes.  The second carving didn’t go much better than the first, and finally, fed up with Monday, I walked outside and sat on the front porch for some air.

As I sat there, staring at the weeds that have accumulated in our garden until they cover the mulch like a bed of grass, I decided that I may as well be productive in my snit.  So I went to the garage, found a big yard bag and my gloves, and set to work.  I worked in the garden until it was too dark to see and it was starting to rain.  I returned to the house to see my poor, faithful husband trying to clean up the kitchen.  Evidently the chicken juices had overflowed the cutting board and were running down the counter and all over the floor.  There were leftover dinner dishes on the table, so I guess they managed to find scrounge some chicken meat that was edible.

After I loaded the dishwasher, I put the bread in the oven.  I set the timer for the usual 30 minutes and went to watch the Food Network.  For some reason I find it incredibly relaxing to watch other people cook.  Especially when everything they make turns out just perfectly and they never spill anything down the counters and all over the floor.  When the timer went off, I took the bread out without really inspecting it.  Later on, when I removed it from the pan, I could see that it wasn’t very brown.  Sure enough, this morning when I cut into it for sandwiches, it was still doughy and raw in the middle.

When I rule the world, I’m going to declare Monday an international holiday.

What did you learn this week?

Happy Tuesday to you!

Little girls are born with PMS. At least mine are. Hope you find the perfect bread recipe soon and pass it along. I have a KitchenAid mixer that my husband bought me for Christmas one year and it makes bread beautifully. Yes, I enjoy getting appliances for Christmas. Hope the rest of the week goes better.

Well, happy Tuesday at least!
It sounds like perhaps your oven is being problematic. It might help to get an oven themometer to check the temp.
Hope today is loads better!
Hugs~

I hate days like that! Mine can happen any day of the week, too. Hope today works out better for you. (I never say it can’t get any worse, because of course, it CAN)

Isn’t your stove new?

You did have a day didn’t you. Many hugs my dear. I hope today is much better!

Oh, I say the granite you are getting. My MIL wanted that one, but couldn’t fit it into the budget. Guess what she did…painted her counter. It looks EXACTLY like granite. It is very cool.

Yeah – Mondays for the birds. And yes little girls can have pms – I am witness to it at least 2-3x/week. Hope the rest of your week goes better.

Oh Jo-Lynne! You are NOT kidding…what a day! You need a great big “blog world Hug” friend. My goodnes – I’m just not sure what to say to that day, except, I’m glad today is a new one! ;) Are you gettin’ a new oven girl?

I have the same brand oven (Frigidaire Gallery series) as you and the same problem. My oven “fix it” man and i are good buds.

If you are really talented, look in the manual and it’ll tell you how to adjust the temp up or down (however, you need a professional thermometer, not the kind you buy at the hardware store).

Funny… my first blog was titled, “Monday, Monday.” Yeah, I feel your pain. But, you gotta have the bad days to really appreciate the good ones (and the small things in life).

Now, I command you to go do something nice for yourself! :)

Yes about little girls! I saw mood swings from 4 on for sure.

But, uh, just wait until they hit 10. Seriously. You’ve been warned.

Wow. That is a tough day. Secretly, I’ll admit to reading your post makes me feel better knowing everyone can have a rough day. Not that I’m smiling about your rough day, it just good to know that I’m not the only one who has told my toddler she’s going on craigslist for a very cheap price – FREE!

Hope your Tuesday is much better!

Target. Is. Therapy.

This is my mantra. I repeat it often. I also say it to my husband. A lot!

I know this was a horrible day for you, but thanks so much for posting about it. A lot of times when I read your blog I just picture your life as so… idealic (not sure I spelled that correctly), even though I know that isn’t the case. You have the healthy eating, and the great kids, and everything just seems to go so well…. Thank you so much for letting me know that my life is normal and that the “ideal” is just something I’ve dreamed up in my head.

P.S. I’m not sure this comment is reading the way I’m thinking it in my head, so just fyi, I mean it in a good way.

I’m glad I decided against that same oven! It is nice to see that you are being honest about it even if it was free…..

Jennifer, haha. Omyword. I’m such a mess. You have no idea! LOL. And the perfect kids? No. I just try not to say too much negative out of respect to them. :-)

Did we have the same Monday? Because my day seemed similar.

Oh Jo-Lynne you poor thing. I despise days like that. And yes little girls have pms–my soon to be two year old had it last week right along with me.
And the whole not saying I’m bored or theres nothing to go, as kids we knew that those words were a sure fire way to be sent to do some obscure very dirty sweaty chore around the house.

Hopefully the rest of your week will go better.

Oh what a day!

I admire the fact that you did some weeding while outside – I don’t think I could have had the energy after such a day :)

My lessons this week include an unexpected dining room makeover.

I just have to say that reading about your day made mine seem like a cakewalk. So thanks for that! :-)

A new target is opening up about 3 blocks away from my house. Can. not. wait!

Oh No! Not your brand new fancy oven!!! I would be very upset. Hope you get it resolved soon! You had quite a day now didn’t you! I’m sure you very very glad to go to bed that night-although you got up to doughy bread. I hate it when that happens! It’s bound to get better!

I am also struggling with my bread making right now. I made breadfor years – very good bread and it seems I cannot get those recipes to work for me right now. SO between unrisen loaves, wasted ingredients, and raw cooked bread I feel your pain on this one.
