I've added a few new features to Musings of a Housewife that I hope will be helpful. Over the weekend I created a Whole Foods Resources page that is a great place to start if you are interested in learning more about the whole foods lifestyle. I also compiled my design tutorials into one convenient location. Both are linked in my nav bar. And there is now a Print Friendly button at the bottom of each post, should you feel like printing recipes or information for future reference. Before printing, you will have the option to delete any photos or content you don't need.
Tiffany commented on my last fashion post and asked:
You need to link to those straight jeans you were talking about (vs. skinny jeans). I need something to tuck into my cute boots. Oh, also any good black boots out there? I want simple ones with heels, leather, and no patent leather. For a decent price. How hard is that?
Ooooh, good questions. Let me start at the end and work my way backwards.
A black leather boot (not patent) with a heel at a decent price… Hm. Are you thinking low boots or high? I’d suggest Marshall’s — one with a shoe department. They have a great selection at discount prices. Or do you have a DSW or a Famous Footwear? Try places like that to get a good price. You can also try Shoebuy.com if you don’t want to leave the comfort of your own home. How about this? Or for a higher boot, this one is gorgeous.
If a low boot is what you had in mind, what about something like this?
As far as the jeans. Word of warning: my denim preferences are rather, um, spendy. My straight leg jeans are by Seven For All Mankind – something like these
.
I love them except the rise is sooooo lowwwwww. Lately I’ve been in the market for a pair of straight-leg, higher-waisted jeans. They are out there, but they are few and far between. All I know is, this post-child-bearing body has had enough of the low-rise trend. I am SO happy to see a higher rise making a comeback, slow though it may be. And by higher, I mean just under the belly button — not up under the armpits or anything. BEWARE OF THE MOM JEAN.
What’s a mom jean? If your waistband is higher than your belly button, you might be wearing mom jeans. If your pockets are above your tushy, you might be wearing mom jeans. If haven’t replaced your jeans since 1999, you might be wearing mom jeans. If your jeans have pleats, you are DEFINITELY wearing a mom jean and I beg you to give them a proper burial. TODAY.
But back to finding Tiffany some straight-leg jeans.
If designer prices give you hives, you may be able to find something similar at the Gap. They have a cut right now called Real Straight that looks promising. I haven’t tried them on, so I can’t recommend them first-hand, but it’s a good place to start. Also, for a lower price-point, check out Old Navy’s skinny jeans. They appear to be more straight than skinny, but again, I haven’t tried them on.
Speaking of jeans, I think I may be addicted to denim. They say admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery, but I’m thinking it might also help if one WANTS to recover. Let’s just say I’m not there yet.
For those who share my passion for denim, you may be interested to know about what I discovered today when I opened my email. I had an email from Amazon.com with this in the subject line — Introducing Amazon’s Denim Shop with Free Shipping & Free Returns on Jeans. Well, you better believe, I clickety-clicked right on over to find this, where I was pleased to find that among the brands that Amazon.com carries are some of my absolute favorites: Seven for All Mankind, Joe’s Jeans, and Lucky Brand Jeans.
I generally don’t recommend buying jeans online, because it takes a lot of trial and error to find a great-fitting pair of jeans. But if you know your size in a certain brand, sometimes it’s easier to order them and try them on at home. After all, we moms don’t have a lot of time to be gallivanting all over creation trying on jeans. And Amazon is on top of their game as usual with the free shipping and free returns on items from their denim shop. I clicked around in there for a while, and they have a nice selection of current trends by some of the most popular brands. I will DEFINITELY include Amazon.com in my rounds from now on when I look for jeans online.

And speaking of denim, Boston Mamas has a post today called Denim Guide: Fit Your Shape. Good info there. Check it out!

I just recently fit back into the skinny levi 505 jeans from my twenties, only to discover that the waist is so high that I can’t stand wearing them. It’s actually ON the waist. So technically – it’s a “mom jean”. Eek.
On the up side, they do look better under tunic’s and long shirts because they don’t bulk out making strange unidentifiable lumps on my hips that force the tunic to ride up and expose more than I planned.
Also, I am no longer risking breaking my iphone in the back pocket when I sit down, since I physically can’t sit on it in these jeans, the pockets seem to be over my kidneys!
Ohh I have a skinny/straight jean suggestion!
Express has tons of jeans, and they are usually Buy 1, Get 1 50% off. Plus, you can usually find a coupon for about $20 off.
They sell jeans in lots of different shapes, but they have one called the “Mia” fit that’s mid rise and I LOVE it…. it has totally solved my low-rise problems… and I know it comes in lots of different shapes – the “barely boot” being my favorite… it’s a cross between the skinny jean and bootcuts.
Those sound great! Keep the suggestions coming!
I just made the skinny plunge the other day ! I bought these Levi’s skinny jeans 421 at Macy’s ($39) I think they’re a bit higher waist – I liked them in the dressing room, but I have not worn them out yet!

Sometimes they take some getting used to. At first I felt kind of hoochie-mama in them. But now I love them.
I bought two pair of the Old Navy skinny jeans. The Sweatheart jean has a longer waist, which I prefer and are much more comfortable than the Diva jean. It was the first time I bought jeans from Old Navy. I have spent everywhere from $100+ for jeans to $20 for them and have to say that the Old Navy $20 jeans (they were on sale) are just as comfy as the $100+ jeans.
(I’m reposting this with my correct blog and contact info…)

Go to 7Forallmankind website. For three more days ALL their jeans are 40% off. Just put in 7Family at checkout. It really does work. I just ordered my daughter-in-law a pair for Christmas.
I’m only 5″3, but petites are too short and the others are generally too long. Any suggestions for me would be greatly appreciated?
i LOVE old navy skinny jeans. LOVE THEM!
If your jeans have elastic, they might be — they ARE Mom jeans.
I have to agree with Karen that I’ve had pretty good luck with Old Navy jeans. I still remember buying my very first pair — that were lower waist AND boot cut — revolutionary in the mid-90’s! Anyway, that pair of jeans is now my “old comfortable pair” that I wear around the house — over 10 years later.
Angie, good question. Unfortunately you may have to have them hemmed. I often have to hem my jeans, and I’m a pretty average height.
Sometimes I get get away with wearing heels at the storebought length, but if I want to wear them with flats, I always hem them. It costs about $20 if you have them retain the original hem, WHICH YOU ALWAYS WANT TO DO WITH DENIM. That way, it keeps whatever distressing went into the hem and it doesn’t look like your momma hemmed your jeans.
