I’ve been working on something that is Top Secret, and I’ve just been dying to tell you about it. Today I finally got the go ahead, and now I’m getting cold feet. I sorta feel like I’m 15 and having my first boy-girl party, and I’m about to drop the invitations in the mail. What if nobody comes? What if they laugh at me?
You’ll come to my party, right?
Okay, so here goes.
The Savvy Source, a website for expert advice on education and parenting, is launching a a new social network for parents called My Savvy Source – a network of school, age-based, blog-based, geo-targeted, and interest-based groups. Bloggers are invited to create a group for their blogging community, where they can talk and ask questions and share information related to their interests. AND they asked me if I was interested in participating by creating a Group and being one of their featured Sources.
My first thought, honestly — we’re all feeling pretty saturated with blogs to read and social networks to join. Who really wants another place to go?
But then I thought about how much conversation is generated from the comments on my blog, both in the comment section and through email. And how I love seeing you guys in each other’s comment sections and chatting on Twitter. I also get a lot of personal emails with questions about food and fashion and blogging and design. And I thought, this could actually be an opportunity to connect and interact more personally than we can on a blog.
SO!
I have created a Group on My Savvy Source, and of course you are all invited to join!
I’m hoping this will be an extension of Musings of a Housewife, a forum for our community to interact and share resources. We can pretend that we’re all sitting around my living room drinking lattes.
I’ve been busy over there, playing house, getting everything all beautified for you. I hope you’ll check it out. You’ll need to first create a profile at Savvy Source. Then join my group labeled, appropriately, Musings of a Housewife. And dive in! There’s a place to share your favorite books, favorite baby gear, favorite toys. You can start conversations, participate in existing conversations, add photos, just basically make yourself at home.
I’ve also created a Source profile. Now you’re probably saying, what’s a source? I know, it’s a bit confusing. The website says this: “Sources are active, prolific, online personalities who use the web to broadcast their unique voices on a variety of subjects. You can follow sources that publish on topics relevant to you, and receive automatic updates on the Savvy Source.”
I figured I’m nothing if not prolific, heh, so I set up a Source page. Basically, you follow Sources, sort of like you follow people on Twitter. I have integrated my Twitter and Facebook updates with my Source page so everything is all in one place.
There is also a tab for Friends. This is basically like Facebook or any ning-style group where you friend people, and they have to accept your friend request.
Beyond that, you’ll just have to see it for yourself! So come on over and poke around. Let me know what you think.
After you create your profile and join our group, let’s talk about Christmas shopping. I’ve started a conversation about it here.

Just went and joined up and left a little message on your shopping question! Tell me this: how can I make my Savvy profile page part of my Google Reader? Does it work that way?
Well, I signed up. I didn’t like adding all my kids information (first b/c of time and second b/c of privacy) but if it helps the conversation along, we’ll see. Good to try new things I guess.
I joined. Now I just have to find some time to sit down and figure it all out
Sarah, I didn’t put in all my kids info b/c I didn’t like that. Also, I protected their info in the privacy settings.
Mary Kathryn, I’m not sure. I will ask. They are totally open to suggestions on ways to improve the site so if there isn’t a way, they might make a way.
You are right, I really don’t have time for more. But I joined anyway. I couldn’t stand feeling like I was missing out.
I added my kids’ birthdays and first names, but nothing else and of course only friends can see that info (I think). There is a lot to figure out!
There IS a lot to figure out. I know. I hope it works out that people can stick with it till it doesn’t seem like a chore. I think it could be really fun, esp with food conversations and such.
Looks lovely! Someday when I’m a parent maybe I’ll join… for now I’ll just stick with reading mom blogs
Congrats on this exciting new venture!
Looking forward to the open chat! I just cannot get my account to activate.
Your “first thought” pretty sums up my reaction too…
“…we’re all feeling pretty saturated with blogs to read and social networks to join. Who really wants another place to go?”
And I *really* don’t have time add another thing. Really.
Best wishes with your mini community though. I hope it turns out to be a hoppin’ place.
