I came across this article over the weekend — 7 Foods the Experts Won’t Eat. Of course I was instantly intrigued. I clicked over and scanned the seven forbidden fruits, and I knew about everything except #1.
What is #1, you may be asking. Too lazy to click over, are you? Well I’ll tell you. It’s canned tomatoes. Evidently the resin linings of tin cans contain PBA, and tomatoes are worse than other canned veggies because the acidity in the tomatoes causes BPA to leach into your food. I had heard mumblings about the lining of canned goods containing PBA, but I didn’t give it too much thought, until this article pointed a finger at canned tomatoes. That’s one of the only things I buy in a can anymore.
Now I know we can’t avoid everything that’s bad for us, but I figure I’m going to do my best with the information I have. So today I stopped into my local whole foods mart to get a few essentials, and I wandered down the aisle with tomato sauces, and lo and behold, there amidst the various canned varieties was a glass jar of pureed tomatoes by Bionaturae. I brought that jar right home and made tacos with it. YUMMO.
As for the other 6? Well, you’ll just have to make that click for those.
What did YOU learn this week?

huh! good to know!
I saw that article and was so bummed. I never realized how much I used canned tomatoes!
I had to give up tomatoes because they contain a lot of glutamate acid–which is fine if you don’t have to watch your glutamate intake! But I didn’t realize that my husband is getting all kinds of chemicals from his canned tomato sauces! I’m going back to making him fresh sauce for now on!
PS:I’m emailing that link to several people who can benefit from the article! Thanks!
Wow! I did not know and that is really the only thing I use on a regular basis from a can.
YIKES! Thanks for the insight.
I read that article this week, too! I thought it very interesting. I just bought tomatoes in the box by Pomi, I think. I also tried organic Granny Smith apples, although they didn’t taste like the insecticide laced ones! Not as good. I bought a couple more to try this week, hoping it was a fluke…
I’m going to click over, but I do have a quick question about the can that the tomatoes are in. Is BPA in the actual can or only in the optional liner of the can? The canned tomatoes that I buy aren’t in lined cans (which is probably even worse).
The PBA is in the lining, but I don’t know about unlined cans. Let me know if if you find out!
I’m sorry to hear that. I use a lot of canned tomatoes! I will have to check out the ones in a jar.
I HATE canned tomatoes. We “can” our own so we don’t have to use them EVER. They are just nasty. They are a lot like canned fruit, have that skin on them…yuck!
and here I am buying Muir Glen tomatoes, thinking I’m being all safe and organic……….
my boys eat a lot of Spaghetti-O’s too……….I’ll have to check into this……thanks!
I didn’t really know any of these and sadly…except for the beef and salmon, we are eating them ALL. I will be changing my tune now! I’m on a very limited budget and all of the organic is SO expensive where I live, even in the co-ops, so I will have to search for more options. The popcorn will be easy to give up, but the apples, potatoes and tomatos will require some adjustments.
THANK YOU for this list. I knew about teh micro P.C. and we have stopped eating that, but the potatos, and canned tomatoes I had no idea!
Now I have learned another lesson this week – did not know that about tinned tomatoes.
I am glad you posted this! Other than the tomatoes (I usually used Trader Joe’s glass jar sauce) and the grass fed beef (which is ALMOST impossible to get up here in Boston) I feel good about the rest of the list – for we made a lot of those changes already.
I knew there was a reason I want to grow my own tomatoes this year. As of right now that and canned beans are all I have that is store bought cans.I plan on doing the home canning of all tomato products this summer though. This just gives me more motivation to do it. Thanks!!
THANK YOU so much for sharing this article. I posted to my facebook & will be referring my family & friends to it – they already think I’m a little “crazy” with my opinions on food. (You know the “full-fat dairy, organic is best, and “whole” foods (not the store) is the best way to eat” opinions!) BUT, I’m happy to say that we are just now battling our 1st colds of the season, I’m 31 weeks preggo & have yet to gain 15lbs (which is healthy for me!) & I am super confident that what I am feeding my family is what is best for them today, tomorrow, and far into the future! Thanks again!
ugh. That is the stuff that is in non-stick cookware, I’m pretty sure. I am pretty sure all tomato cans are lined and I wonder if Whole Foods especially is selling cans lined with this.
I also wonder why there is not more jarred tomatoes. Pasta sauce almost exclusively comes in jars.
I’m pretty good on this list now that we just ordered our first 1/4 side of grass-fed beef!
The potatoes and apples are something we do not always buy organic, though. I try but they can get expensive. We eat a lot of apples so this kind of worries me. The potatoes we don’t eat too many of and I will buy organic if they are comparable. I have heard this about root vegetables though.
good info!
Oh no! Another dangerous food!
I just read that article recently too…and I think I may try to buy jarred tomatoes from now on too.
Thanks so much for posting that article, Jo-Lynne. I already use fresh tomatoes, but am very concerned about apples and potatoes now.
Appreciate you sharing.
I clicked. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
yikes! thanks for the tomato tip – I buy those by the cartload…
I love Christmas cards and most letters too (except the braggy ones- but I think I might like those too because they make for interesting conversations with my mom and sister-in-law). Opening the mail each day in December is truly one of my favorite things this time of year. I have noticed that we are receiving less cards this year and I do not enjoy that trend. I also don’t think an e-mail with a picture is nearly the same thing as a card, but I understand why some are making that choice. I would much prefer a card.
