What I Learned This Week

what-i-learned-this-weekAnd a facial doesn’t hurt either.

Every winter my skin takes on the characteristics of a cold-blooded crocodile, and every winter around this time I throw in the towel and walk into my nearest department store and lay myself at the mercies of the first makeup counter attendant who makes eye contact and beg for her most miraculous moisturizing cream, which she is always delighted to sell me.  At a nauseating price.

And every year she says, as she rings up my order, “Are you exfoliating?”

DANG.

I know this.  I KNOW THIS.  Why I do need to be told the same thing every year, like an errant schoolgirl?

This week, once again, I learned that I must exfoliate regularly if I’m going to keep my skin looking moist and nourished.  Sure enough, after a few applications of my favorite exfoliant, not to mention the luxurious facial that I treated myself to last week (thanks for the gift card, mom!), I am pleased to announce that my face no longer resembles a reptile.  Wahooo!

I also have to admit that I love the Kate Somerville moisturizer and serum that I purchased in my moment of desperation, although I’m not sure that I really needed to switch.  But you can use the serum under the moisturizer for maximum absorption, OR you can use it after your moisturizer, and it provides a nice base to your foundation, for that popular dewy look.  I’ve been using it that way, and I love it.  It seems to prevent my skin from looking flaky as it has a tendency to do.

JUST in case you were in the market for an overpriced skincare system.

How about you?  What did YOU learn this week?

  1. Oh lands. I purchased some wonderfully overpriced Arbonne moisturizer and facial scrub from my sister-in-law and for the first time in 36 years am actually using the skin care products. I can tell such a difference in my skin. It makes my face feel like silk. Love it!

  2. Yeah, I pretty much do the walk of shame every time I try to sneak past the Macy’s make-up counter. I wear an SPF moisturizer religiously. Everything else is hit or miss. Mostly miss. :-)

  3. This is the sort of thing that I have never really got the hang of. It’s as much as I can do to use a proper facial cleansing wipe daily, the idea of all the other stuff is just too much for me.

Oh yes, must exfoliate here as well. It is brutal in the winter if you don’t!

I am experiencing the same flaky face! It’s awful! I’ve taken the cheaper route and use the buffing sponges every couple of days and then lather with moisturizer. It’s weird, I random dry spots everywhere! Oh, I just love winter!
    Have a great day!

I know this to yet I have put off this step for many years clinging to my youth. But as luck should have it I am going to have to start soon.

    Have a wonderful day!

I LOVE a good exfoliation session! I have a great microdermabrasion I use twice it a week and OH GIRL my face feels like a million bucks! If you find yourself in the market for another exfoliator, try it the Mary Kay Microderm, it’s pretty inexpensive comparably speaking. Glad your skin is feeling better!

  8. Talk about overpriced skincare systems! About a year and a half ago I started using Obaji, which I love, but it’s pricey. I also use a serum from Skinlogics that’s great, but, again, pricey. I guess as we get older it all becomes worth it. Sort of.

My trick is to use a washcloth to wash my face once a day, in the shower in the morning. I use my hands at night just so I don’t over-exfoliate. I never have flakey skin, so I guess it works. (Of course, my skin is oily, so that may have something to do with it. ;) )

I have the same sort of skin and yes lotions and exfoliants is what I swear by

Funny you should talk about skin care this week because that’s exactly what I’ve been experimenting with! I followed the recipe from this site:
http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/ except I used EVOO. LOVE it! I also use good quality coconut oil on my skin. I’ll say this – my adult acne issues are becoming a thing of the past, as is my dry skin. and it’s CHEAP!

  12. I never exfoliate and rarely moisturize!

When I visit a beauty counter, and one of the assistants is applying cream/makeup they always comment on my lovely skin – but as I neglect mine terribly I reckon they just say that to everyone!

I just learned this last week too! I got one of those photo scans of my face done and she said the same thing, to exfoliate! I’m on it!
