If there is anything I like more than a sleek new pair of jeans or a sassy new handbag, it’s a shiny new gadget loaded with all the latest technology. Lately I’ve been hankering after a new smartphone that better suits my needs and I’ve been avidly following the chatter over the newest offerings in that realm. I even bought a new phone a few weeks ago that I was hoping would be my electronic soulmate and promptly returned it when it fell short of my expectations.
And I’m so glad I returned it because last week I was offered the opportunity to participate in a campaign with the fabulous ladies of The Motherhood to test drive the Palm Pre Plus on Verizon for one month.
I’ve been using the Palm Pre for a few days now, and it’s my new BFF. Just ask my friends from Blissdom. I kept shoving my phone in their faces to show them one more cool trick I’d discovered. In fact, right now I’m typing this post on my Palm because I got on the plane headed back to Philly only to discover that my computer was dead and I packed my book in my checked baggage. Yeah, NICE.
When I made that discovery, I thought I was destined to go stir crazy during the two-hour trip home, but then I pulled out my Palm Pre to see if there was some sort of notepad where I could jot down some post ideas, and I discovered a great little Memo app. I can even email this memo to myself when I get back on the ground. What was going to be a few ideas turned into this entire post.
Here are my first impressions of the palm:
It is sleek and stylish and comfortable to hold.
I wish it came in cute colors, but it does come with a chic little brown and orange felt case, which is a good thing because I was absent the day grace and coordination were handed out and my phones tend to take a beating.
The pull-out keyboard is functional and easy to use. I like how it comes out from the bottom rather than requiring me to turn it on its side like some, ahem, other brands. It took me a few minutes to get used to using the period button rather than a double space, but it’s located in a convenient spot, and I also like that you don’t have to shift for it or the @ sign (or switch to another screen) — that makes typing email addresses that much easier.
I find the touch screen a breeze to use. It’s responsive and intuitive. It uses gestures much like my iPod Touch so I was pleased with that feature.
My favorite part is the multitasking. I can have many apps open at once and it’s simple and fun to move between them. I’ll show you what I mean in a video next week. I also love the notifications that appear at the bottom of the screen. They don’t interrupt what I’m doing, but I know instantly when I have a new email or text message.
It has a nice little camera that takes remarkably good pictures. And bonus, it seems to hold a ton more photos than my old phone.
I am pleased with the free twitter app. I’ll write more on the apps in another post.
I do wish it had a gmail app, though. I’ll just put that out there. I’m used to having a gmail app that integrates with the features that I love about gmail. Perhaps that is something they can add. My work-around, for the time being, is to go right to mail.google.com in the web browser. I was able to put this page into my Launcher (you can put any web page you want into your Launcher) so that I basically have a shortcut to it. And that’s how I’m reading and managing my email on the Palm. It actually works out okay.
The graphics are sharp, and I’m absolutely loving the web browsing. That was my biggest beef with my old phone.
You notice I keep saying my “old phone.” I would love to make the switch when this campaign is over, but I’ll have to do the math and figure out what to do with the remainder of my current plan.
And since it is, after all, a phone, I should tell you that the phone works great too. The reception is clear, and I’m getting better coverage with Verizon than I have with my other carrier.
As a participant in the Verizon Palm Pre Plus campaign, I’ll be hosting a giveaway with each of my four posts. The first three giveaways will be a $25 Verizon gift card, and the last week will be a Palm Pre Plus!
To be eligible to win the $25 gift card this week, leave a comment telling me why you may want to win a Palm Pre Plus.
Fine Print: I wrote this review while working on a Verizon Palm Pre Plus campaign by TheMotherhood.com on behalf of Verizon Wireless and have been given a Palm Pre Plus (and prizes for giveaways) to facilitate my review.”

I would love to win this phone for my wife!! She really wants a new phone, but we can’t afford one right now.
wow- that looks like lots of fun. I love my bberry but would like something that I can get cool apps on!
I have been thinking about ordering this for a while now but I hadn’t seen or heard any reviews of it. I’m NOT switching to AT&T for the iPhone and so I would definitely be interested in something that works for Verizon!
I got a palm centro last year… and love it! When I saw they had come out with a palm pre, I had smartphone envy. I have a friend that switched from the iphone to a palm pre and just loves it. Now I just need to justify a data plan…
I’ve always had the standard, bottom of the line phone. No extras. Sometimes I feel like I may as well be using my toddler’s “little tykes” phone. It has more features.
Ok, you have me thinking now. I know, dangerous. I didn’t like my old Palm but am thinking this sounds muh better than the one I had. I am happy with Verizon’s coverage, even though it’s not very good at my home…. (nothing is when you live in the middle of nowhere) but only 2 minutes from here it works great and if I stand on one leg in the front yard I get service too, just not in the house…..
Great post………..as usual…..Have a good day girlio!
I admit I am a late adapter to most phone technology – but after reading your review – I think it is time I get current with this Verizon phone. It’s a sure sign that my phone is so “not with it” when my 13-year-old refuses to borrow it in case of emergency – he would rather die!
I desperately need a new phone! My plan is up next month, so I am excitedly researching what will work best for me. This one looks great. Love to win the gift card to help with the costs!
Keeping my fingers crossed!
I want to win so that I can have a cool phone like all the other big-time bloggers!
Wow! I’ve only had traditional cell phones that don’t do a whole lot more then make phone calls, which is fine… but a new “phone” with crazy apps… sounds awesome!
Can I just say that I am GREEN with envy right now. I have been sweating the Palm Pre since it came out. I have the Verizon Voyager which I love, but it doesn’t do the whole app thing and I want that feature. I also like that it has the keyboard because while I like the touch pad for some things I find having a keyboard so much easier for writing posts, using the web browser, sending emails, and of course texting! As far as Verizon, that is my carrier and I’m very pleased with them. Actually other than having Sprint for a very short time as in months I’ve always been a Verizon customer. I am thinking that for my b-day Palm Pre will be right at the top of my list that is if I don’t win it here!! You always have the best giveaways!!!
Too ironic! My phone died last week- I lost all my text messages and phone contacts- ugh, a SAHMs lifeline to the outside world. I put my SIM card in to an old phone we had so at least I can get text messages and phone calls- but now I spend a few minutes trying to figure out who its from based on content before I finally have to say “Who is this?”- embarrassing!!!!
I want a Palm Pre Plus because I have an old getto phone…and not enough $ to buy one myself!
I fee like a social outcast when I attend a work meeting and find that I am the only one without a smart phone-I am app deprived and would love to win!
I want to win cause my current phone is LAME. SUPER LAME. And I want to be like you. So there is that.
Why do I want the Palm Pre Plus? because you showed it to me at Blissdom and I now have a serious case of cell-phone-envy!
I’d like to win a Palm Pre Plus because I don’t have a smartphone, and I’d be cooler if I did.
Is it wrong to just WANT one and not necessarily NEED one? That looks so cool. And I think our carrier plan expires really soon! LOL
Hugs
Kim
What a great phone! I’d sure make good use of the display with a two year old grandson and a baby sister due any day now. Of course, that’s not to ignore all the other great applications it has too. I’d love to have such a wonderful present.
I want to win a Palm Pre because I DESPERATELY need something electronic that will ding at me for appt reminders nd to keep all the appt, kids’ stuff, etc. straight. I currently use a Google calendar but can only access it when online–useless!! A Palm Pre would combine the calendar, cellphone, and e-mail into one so less junk in my purse.
My daughter is living in Paris this year and it would so help me keep in touch with her. I do love Verizon too!
My hubby has the Palm Pre from Sprint and loves it! He is now wanting the Palm Pre Plus from Verizon. We have a year left on our contract, but with Verizon lowering their prices, we might make the switch over! I have the Palm Pro, but I want the Palm Pre or a Blackberry. But, I have a touch screen now, and I don’t know that I could use a Blackberry without one!!
I would love one of these!! I am way behind in terms of phone technology!! Thanks!!
I have been using the same flip phone for 5 years…the one and only cell phone I’ve ever had. I would love $25 to use towards a new phone!
I would love to win a Palm Pre Plus because I have been looking for a device like this to help keep me more organized.
Sounds like you are having lots of fun! I love smart phones! They are so much fun on their own!
I may want to win the palm pre (Is that what it’s called?) because my current phone is ancient. My daughter gets mildly embarassed when I pull it out to use it! Thanks!
Ooh, I’d love a Palm Pre! I take my toddler to see her Grandparents 5000 miles away, for a month, every year. And, I always hate being separated from my computer/email/internet/etc. I never have room to lug my laptop along with us, but a smartphone would fit in my purse all nice and neat.
Just found you today! Hurray! Love Verizon and in desperate need of a new phone.
I love Verizon and would love to try the Palm Pre. My friend has had Palms for years and won’t give them up. Who needs iPhone?! Palm Pre sounds awesome! Thanks for all you do!
I just saw an ad for this yesterday. My hubby has an iPhone for his work phone, but we are on Verizon. This looks appealing because of the combination touch screen and real keyboard. I like my BlackBerry keyboard better than the touch screen keyboard on the iPhone. I will be interested in hearing more about the apps!
I LOVE Verizon. I think that they are totally the best network ever. I never have trouble getting service. I have the Blackberry Tour and the other day I typed a whole blog post online and posted it straight from my phone while waiting in the dr’s office. The only thing it doesn’t let me do is format my post in blogger. I could only type it and post it. But that is pretty awesome.
Would be nice to upgrade to a phone that actually has a camera and any kind of applications. I am still using an older phone and have never gotten into texting, let alone posting a blog post via my phone!
I desperately need a new phone. Mine keeps turning itself off in the middle of phone calls. our phone plan expires this month so we’re headed to Verizon and this would be awesome!
I’m a diehard Palm fan. We have ATT right now and the Pre is not available with AT&T and I’m so sad! I have a Centro right now. I keep looking at the iPhone and honestly I don’t think the calendar function even remotely compares to Palm phones and I like the thought of having a raised touch pad with the Pre. Can you color code calendar functions on the Pre like you can with the Centro? I LOVE being able to look at my month view calendar and see when my daughter has functions just by looking at the colors!
I’m about to start my new job as a Nurse Practitioner and I would love love love a Pre….the medical apps that are available are amazing and the big screen is a huge plus.
I thought of you when I got this pitch, Susan! For some reason I remembered you had a Palm.
Yes, the calendar is multi-colored. I am used to my Google calendar so I haven’t looked at the Palm calendar much yet, but I know it’s one of its best features and I’m looking forward to getting accustomed to it. I think it syncs with my Google calendar too.
I am NOT a luddite, but my old cellphone keeps trying to make a liar out of me. I would love to get with the new century and add my cell to the rest of my verizon network.
I’d like the palm pre because I have never texted and want to see what all the fuss is about;)

I would like to win a giftcard from Verision. my husband just bought a new phone from there.
I’ve been using a Blackberry Curve for the last two years and am craving a better display and browser. I love the Blackberry compatibility but hate the browser. I hadn’t been considering the Palm Pre, but now I’m intrigued.
I’m SO happy to hear you love the Palm Pre! I started researching them just last week.
I switched from Verizon one year ago b/c my husband wanted an iPhone. I hate AT&T Wireless. I have so many dropped calls and the blackberry I own is not as great as the one I had with Verizon. AT&T has replaced my phone twice in the one year I’ve owned it.
I will move back to Verizon soon, even if it does cost us more monthly by having two plans. I gave it a go for one year and it’s not working for me. I’m frustrated… and ready go back to Verizon and have a Palm Pre in my hand!!
I could really use this giftcard to update to a new phone. I need to have a better way to keep myself organized.
I’m commenting because I just ‘looked’ at this phone a week ago. I have an older verizion phone and I ‘hate’ it. A week ago, in the middle of texting for work, my phone literally died. After 2 days of dealing with customer service and no mysterious reason, my phone was replaced under warranty, but I’m not eligible for a now one until June. I have even been surfing for any info regarding ‘upcoming’ phones when I am eligible. I liked the size of this one and appreciate reading your reviews.
Ever since I lost my phone two weeks ago, I’ve been looking for a new one. Palm Pre looks like a great option to go.
I’m starting a new business and how awesome would it be to start off with a gadget like Palm Pre to help me in communicating with new clients.
It took me and my husband many years to take the plunge and buy simple cell phones. As a busy SAHM to seven, I would love to to jump either further with the Palm Pre.
I would love to win this smart phone because I would never buy one for myself. I usually get the basic, basic phone because I’m on a budget.
I need to stop writing on post it notes…. I can never find them. My current phone doesn’t have a notepad.
Because if you saw the phone I am using right now you would laugh until you died. And we can’t have that now, can we?
i need a palm because i keep washing my razrs!
I have been eyeing the Palm Pre. I was a palm girl way way back, before they were integrated with phones, then strayed away. After using several smart phones, I’ve found every single one lacking. I’d love to go back to Palm!
I would love to upgrade to a smart phone! My brain seems like mush after having 3 kids…at least I would have my phone to keep me on track!
Id love to to try a phone with all these cool apps.I have the most basic of basic phones .It seems like i could more productive
I’ve been disappointed with other smartphones at this point – and I have even considered leaving Verizon to get the IPhone. I am happy about the possibilities of this Palm Pre Plus! After your review I may consider the switch over to a good smartphone that will help with doing many tasks throughout the day!
I am desperately looking for a new phone. My 2 1/2 year old Voyager won’t hold a charge to save its life! PulEASE pick me!
I am looking at new phones (my contract is up) and have been dreaming of getting a smartphone. I am between the Palm and a couple others!
I would love this I think I am the only one in the world that doesn’t have a cell phone! Yes that’s right I do NOT have a cell phone!
Well, I love, love, love my current phone, but McDaddy could use a new one and already has a Verizon plan! So, I’ll throw my hat in the ring! =)
Hi Jo-Lynne. I’ve been amused by the tweets about your Palm Pre Plus infatuation and now this!
I was *this close* to getting the Palm Pre so to read that this new phone is all that and more is a great thing. After all the time I’ve spent pining for the Palm Pre, it would be awesome to win the gift card or Palm Pre Plus.
So nice to see a real hands on review of a phone.
).
I have been wanting a smart phone for quite a while now (I still have a pre-paid
Verizon by far has the best coverage in my area, so I have been researching my options. I am the type that is afraid to decide for fear of making the wrong choice, but this phone looks great!
Because I love to win stuff!
I need that phone to help me organize my life!
I can barely use my basic phone, so I think a touch screen would help me along with trying new apps, etc. I really would like to have my calendar on a phone instead of on the fridge. Can’t tell you how many times I needed to know if I had an appointment and didn’t have my calendar with me.
I also have the Palm Pre except from Sprint so I have had it awhile. I use gmail and just added it my my email app…it works great and you will one touch access to your email…no need to go through the launcher. That is unless there are benefits to gmail that I don’t know of yet (just signed up for gmail since hotmail had major issues on the Pre).
Have fun playing…I love it!!!!
Wow – a new cool phone like that would be a reason to switch to Verizon…
Any smartphone would be a good replacement for my current one. Nowadays, phones are not just used for call and texting, but for scheduling, planner, surfing and a lot more. So, it would be nice to have a smartphone instead.
Oh, I’ve seen the commercials for this phone on tv and realllllly want one. As a stay-at-home mom, however, I feel like I can’t justify going out and getting it – you know how us moms are, we can’t spend any money on something nice for ourselves – so I would love to be able to win one!
I do have Verizon already and really am pleased with their service – both in the quality of my calls and their customer service. The few times I’ve had problems in the past 14 months, Verizon has always promptly taken care of any issue and I appreciate that.
Please enter me in your giveaway!
b/c once Lent is over, I want to Tweet w/o having to have my computer on and tempting me!
Oooh, I would so love to win a Palm Pre Plus, because my current phone is on it’s last leg! I’m hoping it holds on until my contract expires! When it does, I’m seriously considering switching to Verizon and this phone would be at the top of my want list!
I would love to win the Palm Pre Plus for my twin sister. I have a smartphone and she’s remarkably jealous of it since she’s using a basic nokia sliderphone with screen that has lines throughout it. It gets the job done, but isn’t nearly as fun. I love the idea of multitasking on a phone. She’s a twitter/youtube addict so she could load her youtube videos in the background while using a twitter app!
And the video quality on this phone is superb!
