American Idol Week 3: Ladies Night

idol-talkGreetings tonight from Snot Central, and please pass the Puffs.  Ohmyword I haven’t been this sick with a headcold since college, at least so far as I can remember.  I feel sorry for anyone who comes within fifty feet of my house this week.  Fortunately it’s gorgeous outside so the kids can play with friends after school.  Of course, it’s the first week of nice weather we’ve had all year and I can’t even go out and run in it.

But enough about me.  Onward to American Idol…  I’m not on the top of my game tonight, but I’m afraid if I don’t live blog the show I’ll be asleep by 8:30 so here goes nuttin’.

Poor little Katie Stevens.  She chose an appropriate song this week, but what’s going on with her pitch?  It’s like she can’t hear the accompaniment or something.  I think Kara and Ellen said it all, so I won’t tax myself.  Movingrightalong.

I look forward to to seeing what Siobhan Magnus will bring us every week, and this week doesn’t disappoint.  Love how she starts out acapella and the way she carries the intensity all the way to the end.  Oh shut up, Simon.  “The Moment” was the acapella part at the beginning. Or perhaps that big sustained note towards the end.  Take your pick.

Lacey Brown has such a great look and such presence on stage.  I keep waiting for her to have that breakthrough performance, and I’m not sure this is it.  I want it to be.  It’s a great song choice for her — I like that it’s more obscure.  It’s definitely her best performance to date, but I’m not jumping up and down.  I think Simon nailed this one.

Katelyn Epperly is singing one of those songs I wish they would ban from American Idol forever and ever amen.  I actually thought she started to pull it together towards the end, but most of it was pretty karaoke-ish.  Still, she has a lot of potential.  I’d like to see her make it into the Top 12.

As an aside, why is Kara hanging all over Simon?

Oooooh, I’m loving this.  This is the Didi I fell in love with during her audition.  I love her intensity and the guitar and the coffee shop vibe.  Simon and Kara got it right.

Paige Miles is singing.  Someone wake me up when it’s over.  Talk about not having a moment.  I kept thinking maybe she was going to ramp it up or something, but no such luck.  If she doesn’t go home on Thursday night I’ll eat this pile of snotty tissues that is growing by the minute.

I love Crystal Bowersox.  The end.

Lilly Scott is putting on another solid performance.  If she wasn’t following Crystal, I’d be all over this.  She’s definitely one of the better contestants this season.

So that’s that.  This is a no brainer.  Katie Stevens and Paige Miles should go home.  They’re both lovely and have bright singing careers ahead of them, but the other contestants are in a different league.  It’s like the majors vs the minors.  Tell me you’re impressed with my brilliant metaphor. Or tell me to go to bed, either one.

I’m really looking forward to the Top 12 this year.  It’s a strong group.

If this recap left you wanting for more, head on over to Boomama‘s place where there is likely to be a Mr. Linky with Idol recaps galore in just a little bit.

Meanwhile I’m going to go to bed and practice breathing through my mouth lest I suffocate in my sleep.

Signed,
Stuffy in Philly

I think our reviews were right on with each other.

    Stuffy in Philly,
I’m with you on your Idol take. I too have that horrific headcold…which has now settled in my chest. I wish I could sleep but I keep coughing…It gets better and better….
    Love,

    • Jo-Lynne says:

Oh no! Don’t tell me that. I’m hoping it won’t settle in my chest, as I’m prone to bronchitis.

      • Tricia says:

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. All four of us in my house got the headcold, but I’m the only one who developed a chest cold too. I’m just lucky like that.

    Dear Stuffy,
No head colds here, just a 3-year-old with croup.
I’d have to agree about Paige. For sure. If she stays, I’ll…I was going to offer to help you eat tha tpile of tissues, but common sense got the better of me. If she stays, I’ll throw my slippers at the television and pitch a hissy fit in my living room.
I think Katie will stay, based on how cute she is and that she has really tried hard to follow the advice of the judges. I think the other one-way plane ticket will go to Katelyn. Let’s face it…if she’s not corny, she is B-O-R-I-N-G. Not a fan, sorry.
Didi? Yes! Siobhan? Heck yes! Crystal? Like you said, The End. Freakin’ amazing! She’s gonna win the whole dang thing.

    • Jo-Lynne says:

Yeah, Katelyn would be my next pick, but I think she’s better than Katie. They were both safe last week, so it’s hard to know…

    Hope you feel better.

And I agree on who should go home.

“I love Crystal Bowersox. The end.” Ditto

But I don’t really care for Lacey Brown. I’m not getting what some people see in her. It wouldn’t bother me a bit if she were not in the top 12.

    • Jo-Lynne says:

She’s not as good as some of them, but I see her potential. She sure does know how to work the cameras. I predict she will go home after Katelyn. (Assuming Katie and Paige go home this week.)

  6. Amy says:

Yep! ME TOO!! Totally a Crystal FAN!

    Go Crystal go!

  7. I agree with most of what you said and your observations — like what’s up with Kara and Simon??

I used your button in my post. I asked (after the fact in the post) if it’s okay. . . Otherwise I’ll wait to be served (or apologize and never do it again). I don’t even know if it is YOUR button.

  8. Amy says:

Exactly what I thought above. Although Paige was so emotional about singing Smile and said how it was so emotional for her – when Ryan asked her why she said it was because Michael Jackson sang it. I get being a fan and all, but it was all weird. She definitely should go home, she was by far, the worst one. And yes, I too love Crystal Bowersox. Feel better!

  9. lol – you’re too fun! I’m with you, but after last night, my fave is Didi…

  10. I agree with your picks for going home.

I also agree that Crystal Bowersox is good. She’s the best girl by far.

However, I can totally see Simon saying in a few weeks, “Crystal you have a great sound to your voice and I love your blusey twist but I’m beginning to think you’re a bit of a one-trick pony.” Meanwhile he’ll be telling everyone else that they need to find their sound and figure out what kind of artist they are going to be and what kind of records they are going to make. Mark my words.

  11. Susanne says:

    Hope your feeling better today.
