It’s Thursday night, which means I have to face my weekly dilemma. Watch Idol and record Survivor? Or watch Survivor and record Idol? It’s tough being a suburban housewife these days. I bet June Cleaver never had to face tricky decisions like this.
So I decided to watch Idol live so that I can use the commercial breaks to catch up on my live blogging, and also so that I can be one of the first to post season nine’s top 12. Maybe I’ll get 50 extra Google hits or something. Woohoo! *whirls index finger in the air*
Didi is the first to take one of the coveted 12 seats. I was slightly worried for her, only because the judges have been so hard on her. I find her incredibly likable, and clearly the American public does too.
Siobhan is also in. Like we were concerned.
Paige and Katelyn come center stage. One will be going home. I’m thinking it’s probably Paige. And I’m wrong. Katelyn is going home. Well, she’s have probably gone home next week, so I’m not incredibly surprised.
And here’s a question I’ve had for, well, ever, at least forever in Idol years. WHY do they have the outgoing contestants sing the song that got them voted out? I’d rather hear someone GOOD give an encore. But maybe that’s just me.
So as Ryan talks to Katelyn, my four-year old blurts: “Mom! Why does she have that stamp on the back of her?” (Referring, of course, to her tattoo.)
Before I have a chance to muster up a response, her older sister explains, knowingly: “It’s a stamp, and it’s there forever.”
R, decisively: “I don’t like it.”
C, with all the wisdom of her seven years: “You don’t have to like it. It doesn’t matter what people look like. It matters if they are nice to you or something.”
Well then. I guess my work here is done.
After a rather lengthy commercial break, Ryan brings four of the guys center stage.
Casey is safe. Tim is safe. And it’s down to Toddrick and Lee. Please please please let Lee be staying. He’s the closest we have to a rocker guy this year. Although Toddrick was quite good last night…
Randy declares Lee as most deserving of the seat with the top 12. Oh no, I’ve got a BAD feeling about this.
But I’m wrong. Lee does get to stay. So much for my intuitions tonight. I’m way off, but I’ve to say, that is possibly the best going out performance in all of American Idol history, at least at this stage in the game — I suppose that’s just proof that they have a stellar group this year.
Cryastal Bowersox doesn’t look well. Does anyone else think so? She doesn’t even look excited about making it to the top 12. I hope she’s okay.
Michael Lynch is wearing a scarf. I wonder if he chose that or if his stylist had to twist his arm. Needless to say, Big Mike is in the top 12.
Why does Ryan have to torture Lacey with hard questions? But she made it, I’m happy to say.
Aaron Kelly made it in. I guess I’m a little surprised, but I’m still thinking Andrew is vulnerable tonight.
Now it’s down to Alex and Andrew, and I really hope Alex gets to stay on for another few weeks. Wow. It’s Andrew Garcia who makes it. Hunh. Well, at least we get to hear Trouble again. I guess I’m taking back what I said about not wanting to hear the outgoing contestants sing their encores. We’ve had two good ones so far tonight. I think I’m enjoying this performance better tonight than I did last night. I really like the uniqueness of his voice. Kinda bummed we won’t be hearing more of him.
Katie and Lilly are the last girls standing, and Kara nails it when she says it’s an odd pairing — one who really knows who she is and another who is really struggling. I’m assuming Katie is going home, right?
WRONG. It’s Lilly. I am shocked. And sorely disappointed. She’s got a good attitude, though. “I just know that there’s an audience out there for me.” *raises hand and waves wildly* I’d buy her album.
Well I am not really in agreement with the top 12 this year, but the true stand outs this season are safely seated among the ones coming back next week for Rolling Stones week. And I do love me some Stones.
What do you think? Did America get it right or wrong tonight?

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Alex was better than some of the ones that stayed and Lilly was definitely better. I’m not exactly happy with the way it ended it up. I guess I should vote.
Well, I didn’t vote so I feel like I can’t complain. But the truth is, that little shy boy really should be in the top 12. And I know I don’t remember his name, but I sure remember his voice. Boo.
Like Emily, I did not vote either, so my comments mean nothing. But seriously? Lilly and not Katie the cruise ship singer? America, what. are. you. thinking????
Glad to see Todrick go, but only because I really think he’ll have better success in a different venue. Like they said, he’s made for Broadway. He has a great future ahead of him. He couldn’t have won Idol anyway.
Not surprised to see Alex go. He has a fantastic voice and all, but not enough charisma. Really, I’ve been disappointed with most of the guys. The only stand-outs to me are Michael and Lee.
I called it with Katelyn. She tried not to, but she came across corny. Poor thing. I thought it would be Paige going home with her, though.
I am happy for Katie. I think she’s going to really grow through this, if she can hang in for a few more weeks. But let me tell you, when it came out that Lilly was going home, I about threw the remote at the tv.
And I think it is extremely classy that Ryan ignored the judges completely from that point. Katie already felt bad…she didn’t need to be ripped to shreds.
I hope Lilly finds that amazing audience, and a producer that will take her where she deserves to be.
I think you summed up my thoughts quite well. You should write recaps, you know.
Girl I felt like (and think I tweeted) that apparently 12 year old girls and their cell phones are the ones making all the votes, for Katie and Aaron to have made it through.
But all is well because Big Mike and Crystal are my faves and they both made it
Yep. Maybe us 30-something moms outta get on the phones.
I too was wondering about Crystal B. She looked either like she was going to throw up or like she was really mad. Or maybe she feels like a sell out. She seems way to cool for AI but then again – so was Adam Lambert. I hope she feels better on Tuesday because I really like her.
I hope she really does get a better life out of this, like she’s hoping. I often wonder when I hear ppl say that they’re doing this for their kids. Showbiz is HARD on families. But then, it might be better than the life they’re living, who knows.
I’m sorry, but I was surprised Paige made it. She just wasn’t very good. And I’m not a Lacey fan, either. Her voice is just not my style.
I’m not always a fan of Lilly’s style but I was shocked she was out. Katie has a good voice but she’s been like a Lawrence Welk singer the whole time – a young person singing to the oldester crowd.
We’ll see how it goes.
Oh, and I was surprised Tim made it and not Alex.
Lawrence Welk – that’s exactly it!
Was never a fan of Lily and after she absolutely butchered Patsy Cline, I was glad to see her go. Katie won’t last long (what will she sing for Rolling Stones night-yikes!) Big Mike and Didi are the front-runners. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Mike and Didi? Hunh. I like Didi but she better find herself really fast if she’s going to compete with Crystal. And I feel really sorry for Katie on Rolling Stones night, lol.
Let’s be real folks. Four girls could’ve gone home last night and given the guys another chance at the stage. I’m always gonna stick up for us ladies but in this season of AI I think the guys are waaaay stronger! Toddrick has a great voice (although I don’t love the Broadway vibe but whatever) and his attitude is upbeat. Alex needs some confidence but his voice is p.h.e.n.o.m.e.n.a.l. So sad. I’ve been singing Trouble around the house all morning! Jo-Lynne, great question – why do they have them stand up there just to humiliate themselves once more on the way out?
Wrong. I think that Lily should have stayed and Paige should have gone. And as for the boys, really, Aaron should have gone instead of Alex. I wasn’t all that into Toddrick, so I’m okay with that. But, Paige and Aaron are the two that I wonder how they made it in!
The last girl and last guy to get booted were DEFINITELY the wrong choice! We didn’t expect it AT ALL with Alex v. Andrew, but after that, I was slightly less shocked with Lilly v. Katie. But never fear… Katie and Andrew won’t last long in the Top 12!
I was not too happy with this week’s results. I like Lilly, although I wasn’t thrilled by her version of Patsy Cline. Katie always sounds like one of those kids who is singing in a beauty pageant.
And am I the only person who cried (seriously I cried for 20 minutes) because Alex Lambert got voted off. I like his voice but that is not the reason I cried so much. Did you all look at his face? I just wanted to hug that boy. He reminds me of someone who has been beaten down by negative comments his whole life and now has no self confidence left. I wanted him to stay and show us all what he could do. I have NEVER felt so bad for a contestant in my life. He was just so sad looking. He really made my heart bleed. Did you notice how much the other contestants cried when he got voted off? I mean Siobhan was crying a river of tears.
Yeah, and Ryan kept saying that commercial break was so intense. I was wondering what was up.
