Links and Shout Outs

links-and-shout-outsMSN: More Saturated Fat Nonsense — Fat Head.  I could pretty much could link to any post on this site and tell you to read and savor every humorous, wise word.

Okay so here’s one more — The American Heart Association: Do These People Read Their Own Data?

Puffed Grains and Breakfast Cereals: Should We Eat Them? — Nourished Magazine.  This one isn’t so funny.  It is downright frightening, if what it suggests is true.  I’d love to see more studies on this topic.

America Needs More Brothals — Food Renegade.  There is some fabulous information in this article.

Okay, enough on food.  I do read other things, I swear.  How about this?

How Much Should Mom Bloggers Earn? — Jennifer James.  I was fortunate to make Jennifer’s acquaintance several years ago, and she is so generous and lovely and smart.  I hang on her every word.  This article is excellent.  Notice she doesn’t say reviews and giveaways should be paid.  (See the post where I explained earned media and paid media if you are confused.)

And speaking of mom bloggers doing a lot of work for nothing, I just came across this article in Social Media Today — Do Big Brands Exploit Mommy Bloggers Who Work for “Prizes and Rewards”?

How to Look Beautiful in 1 Minute or Less — Wardrobe 911.  These are my basics too.  And also, I use the precision curler she mentions; I also learned about it in Looking Younger.

Are y’all using Swagbucks yet?  I’m making money just by searching the web, which I do A LOT.  I can’t wait to trade in my points for Amazon gift cards and go Christmas shopping!  Yeah, I’m thinking long term.

And that’s all I’ve got for you today.  It’s time for my weekend run.

As a former employee of the food industry you so disdain, I would caution you to read the Breakfast Cereal article with a hint of caution. If you can provide me a few peer reviewed, published studies, I’d be much more likely to believe the information. With no concrete data, nor any mention of method or analysis, making blatant statements of cereal causing death is rather bold.

I also believe in minimizing processed food intake and favoring whole foods (which is ironic considering my pre SAHM profession). Yet, as a mom of young kids, often times a bag of cheerios saves the day. It isn’t always possible to make 100% of my family’s meals and snacks from scratch and letting the kids snack on unsweetened cereals is way better than other processed food alternatives.

Michelle, that’s why I said I would like to see more studies on the subject. Until that point, I’m not taking my chances. Boxed cereal isn’t that important to me.

Apparently I do not search enough. I’m earning more than before, but I get tired of doing a search for each blog I read until I get lucky and get more bucks. Oh well, it is still easier than a real job. ;)

I feel like I’m always searching for something. But I have heard that the referrals really help a lot, which is why I keep mentioning it. :-)

  3. Wow… I could only hope to make that in a year on my blog one day. That is an insannnnnnnne amount of money. Can I just tell you how many “can I pick your brain” emails I get a week. I’d say at least 5-10. Maybe I should consider charging for those consultations… but how does one even make that jump????

    • Jo-Lynne says:

Jennifer, I think it depends on a) who is wanting to pick your brain and b) what kind of information you are providing.

I’m always willing to help a fellow blogger with a few questions, and I am answering emails all the time to help others out. But if it is a company who wants ideas as to how to reach the social media space? That is consulting and should be paid. Again, it depends on the company. If it’s a small start up by some mom at home, well, that is something you can often trade your help for product (or obviously if you want to help her get her biz off the ground out of the goodness of your heart, that’s fine.) But if it is an established company with a marketing and pr budget who is trying to get free info from mom bloggers b/c they think they can, then it’s time to step up and state your fee.
