I watched it on the recommendation of some friends. Great show! We are not the healthiest family, but I feel like we do better than most. Some of what I saw was shocking. Can’t wait for next week.

Oh, I had another thought about this show. They don’t talk much about the lunch schedule and how much time the kids have. My kids get half an hour for lunch. If they finish early, they can go play outside. The lunchroom staff tries to make sure everyone eats at least a little bit, but apparently there is still a big problem with kids throwing away a lot of food just so they can go outside and eat. So, our school is experimenting with the 3rd and 5th graders the rest of the year. They are going to play first, and eat second, and see if that cuts down on the waste. I hope it does. I wonder if kids at the school on the show sometimes just want to get outside, and so don’t eat b/c of that. Also, didn’t it seem like the portions they were given were pretty big? My kids wouldn’t have been able to eat everything on those trays, even if they liked it!

When he did this in the uk a few years ago it had a real impact, and the government definitely listened. There is now much less junk and more healthy choices for school dinners.

My mom watched this and it was all she could talk about today. Listening to her I was mentally going through what is in my frig and freezer and was happy to realize that there are tons of veggies, some I even put up fresh myself. But in the spirit of honesty there is also a lot of junk too.

I watched it! While it was so sad how the head school cook (Alice) could care less about all the chemicals she’s feeding those kids (“it doesn’t bother me”) and the family they focused on- it is so typical. So many people just buy/eat things & never even bother to look at the label- they just don’t care! However, it is good news to me that ABC is putting a show like this on – it means that people are thinking & talking about “real food” more & gives me hope that more people will wake up out of their chemical preservative induced coma!

I taught in private school, and I ate lunch in my classroom with my kids. But they packed lunches and I didn’t walk around much or pay attention to what they ate.

I was amazed, though, at how much better the kids in the show ate with Jamie and the principal walking around, showing interest, and helping them with their silverware. I think he made a good point. We have aides in our lunchroom too, and they do walk around, but I don’t know how much they help.

My kids do use a knife and fork, for whatever that’s worth. I don’t know how early is necessary to introduce it, but by 2nd or 3rd grade, I think it’s a good idea. All 3 of my kids use them, but my son (4th grade) is the only one who really uses it properly all the time.

I saw the promo premiere last week and was A.M.A.Z.E.D. It actually made me feel ill just watching it. I’ll be watching the series for sure!

I just watched it (thank goodness for the DVR). So fascinating.

As a former teacher, what are your thoughts about his idea that teachers should be in the cafeteria helping the kids with utensils and such? Our school has staff in the cafeteria, but not every teacher or anything. At home my kids use a fork, but I rarely give them a knife! I guess I’m just lazy. Now I feel like I must let them learn how to use one. But I think teachers would want/need time to eat their own lunch too.

It was pointed out that his food was coming in too expensive. I’ll be interested to find out how he handles that problem. Our local news is doing spin-off stories from the show now. Today I saw a segment about a private school that is offering fresh food, but it can cost up to six dollars a kid! And of course the public school district says its hands are tied by government regulations.

It was a great show and I will definitely be watching the rest. We’re trying to make some changes around our house already, and I’m sure this will only motivate me more. Can’t wait to read your thoughts.
