What I Learned This Week

what-i-learned-this-weekThis week has been a DOOZIE.  Evidently Firefox doesn’t like the word doozie.  Let’s try doozey.  Doozy?  Nope.  Got that sassy red underline every time.  I guess doozie isn’t an official word.  Well, I think it should be.  So there.

This week I learned that when I haven’t been sick in over a year, my body will invariably decide to concede at the most inopportune time, such as when my husband has a coworker over for dinner and I am supposed to have a lovely dinner prepared, and THEN goes out of town the very next day and leaves me on my own to die a slow miserable death while simultaneously trying to keep the house running and three kids clothed and fed.  And yes, that was one sentence, what do you want to make of it?

So I’m finally on the mend.  Sorta.  This is one of those full-on 10-day colds, evidently.  It’s going to run it’s course to the bitter end.

It hasn’t helped that the weather has been beyond miserable — rainy and cold for days on end.  One day the wind actually had the rain blowing sideways, and I was wet from head to toe, just from walking from the house to the car.  Yeah, good times.

Those of you who have been around here for the long haul are probably thinking, Here we go again…

Word of warning to the newbies: I spend the entire months of March and April complaining about the weather and lamenting the fact that spring does not exist north of the Mason Dixon line.  And yet somehow I, the girl who LIVES for summer, ended up spending the majority of her adult life in the arctic tundra of Pennsylvania, all because I had to go and fall in love with a Philly boy.  (FYI: Philly boys never leave.)

Oh well, at least they have cheesesteaks and hoagies.  Yes, Firefox, HOAGIE IS SO A WORD.

UPDATED Tuesday morning: I also learned that once sun finally decides to show its pretty face and I am finally feeling better and I can finally go outside and run after a 10-day suspension, one of the little people will invariably get sick.  Yes, you guessed it.  My 4-year-old is coughing up a lung.  So much for my plans for today.  I know, I know.  There are people with real problems.  I just needed to vent.

What did YOU learn this week? You know the drill.  (Please link directly to your WILTW post, not to your main blog page, and don’t forget to link back here to the WILTW headquarters. Thank you kindly!)

  1. I think it’s inevitable we get sick at the most inconvenient times. Those are the times you want to be tagged out and send in a replacement! Praying you feel completely well soon.

The thing I learned this week……I am a morning person even though I didn’t start out that way. ;)

  2. Kellyn says:

Sunshine was here all weekend, so maybe it will come your way SOON!!! We are being told that snow might come on Saturday, but I can deal with that as long as we get back into the warmer days soon after. I can see grass and I REALLY want it to stay that way.

  3. robin says:

But if the temp had been 20 degrees colder, we’d be digging out from ANOTHER 30 inches of snow! At least the rain washed all the dirty snow away and next weekend says SIXTIES. Glass half full!

  4. My Saturday was horrible and I was a brat, but we’ll just moverightalong and talk about other things… and yes, having a hubby that must travel pretty much bites the big one!!!! *big sigh*

  5. This was fun to read. I’m hoping you are feeling better since you are able to find some humor in all of this. I need to read some of your design tutorials so I can actually have a clue about design. Take care!

  6. Janmary, n ireland says:

I learned I am TOO busy to share any lessons as I am finalising my St Patricks Day blog carnival prizes, photos etc!

Happy St Paddy’s day for tomorrow :)

  7. Oh my friend, that stinks. Garlic tea will knock it right out though. I haven’t had a 10 day cold in years. It will usually knock it down to 3-4 days. I’m even so nice as to link it for you . It doesn’t taste as bad as it sounds.

    Hope you feel better soon.
    Hugs from afar

  8. Oh my gosh! Did you sneeze on me? Because I feel like death today . . . and I haven’t been sick in well over a year either (thank you, probiotics!) . . . and I’m speaking at a women’s retreat this weekend. Figures.

  9. Suzanne says:

The humor and sarcasm in this one reminded me fondly of why I first started reading your blog & twitter posts regularly. You are so funny!

Though I am sorry that you were venting about feeling cold and having a cold, thanks for the laugh. And I learned a little something about Philly boys too.

  10. Jennifer says:

I’m glad you are starting to feel better. :)

  11. Nancy from Mass says:

I learned not to step on the railroad ties that run along our driveway because they could be icy (but not look it). I am sitting here at work with my leg up on a box and an ice pack on my badly bruised and swollen foot, a large gauze pad on my lower shin because I no longer have skin on that part of my leg and a bandaid on my knee.
Philly boys do leave Philly… I have one here in Mass! (Although I’ve noticed that no one from Philly/Levittown/Fairless Hills/Yardley travels north…the roads apparently only travel south. ) Even though I’m vegetarian now, I would still eat a Jim’s Steak n Whiz! (Jim’s on South Street)
Glad to hear you’re feeling better, but sorry your little one isn’t.

    • Jo-Lynne says:

Wow, how did you get him to leave? Tell me your trick. And I’m only interested in roads going south, so that would be JUST fine. :-)

      • Nancy from Mass says:

My FIL was transferred to Phoenix for 2 years, then to NH. Hubby lived in AZ for the 2 years but was stung by a scorpion and almost died. Then his dad was transferred and hubby decided to move in with his cousin in Mass for a change of pace. He eventually moved to NH, met me, got a job in Mass and moved to Mass. We’re still here and love it. Although we go to PA to visit, he doesn’t want to move back. Also, his extended family there (aunts, uncles, cousins and friends) hardly ever comes up here. Other than our wedding, they’ve only been up twice in 16 years.

    • Jo-Lynne says:

Oh and I’m SO SORRY to hear about your leg! OWWWW….

  12. DeAnn says:

I learned that adjusting to the time change is MUCH harder when the kids are in school as opposed to when they are learning at home! Grumpy kids and grumpy Mom this week. :( We’ll be fine next week, right? Hope you feel 100% soon!!

  13. Grace says:

LOL! You have the most creative ways of whining! LOL!

  14. Darla says:

OMG I’m giggling out loud with you fighting with firefox.

Sorry you were sick. And spring? yeah, no Iowa doesn’t sign up for spring. We’ donate it to the south, apparently, cuz we’re generous like that.

  15. I also learned that your white chicken chili is indeed fabulous, but that’s not a post. . . yet.

  16. Cheryl B. says:

I’m sorry, but it is very reassuring to read your post and learn that I am NOT the only one who the infamous “Murphy” works overtime on!!! Him and his darn ‘rules’. BOTHER!!! NU-MER-OUS times I have submitted requests that he PERMANETLY lose the files about my existance. They have yet to be acknowledged, let alone granted. Yes, I sent them subliminaly. But I have also stated it right out loud. And I’ve posted about it. And I’ve emailed friends about it (due to other things about him, I am positive he is a hacker and reads everything). And I’ve added it to hand written letters. … I am tired of my request being ignored!!! o;-p

As for the words that the computers don’t reconize … yeah, techknowledgy does not keep up with things quite as good as some would like for you to believe! The word I used in the posting which I linked up, which my computer flat out refused to reconize, was: “ungiveawayable”. You get what it means, right?!

And as for your run on, very long sentance. My mom was an English Major – through and through!!! I, on the other hand, was much more interested in learning to become a fabulous cook like her mom was, which my mom did end up appreciating, but could not fathom why I (in her words) refused to be good at both. The English launage just has w-a-y to many rules, most often the new one contradicting the one they just pounded into your head. And this ‘newer’ concept of phonix didn’t work for me back in my youth, don’t know why they think it will work with today’s youth. Seriously people!!!

There, now I vented too :-D
Thank -you so-o much!! I do feel much better!!!
    :-D

  17. april O'Brien says:

So sorry to hear that you’re feeling lousy still. (Crossing my fingers) This is the first winter that I haven’t gotten a SINGLE cold….thanks to 5000IU of vitamin D a day!

You crack me up firefox telling you about doozy and hoagie not being words. LOL!

    • Musings of a Housewife says:

Yeah, I’ve been tanking up on D3 as well. Thought it was doing a great job keeping me well but I guess nothing is fool proof? ARGH.

  18. Ashley says:

Glad you’re feeling better – enjoy the sunshine!! :-D

  19. amy2boys says:

I gave up b*tching about the weather for Lent. (I failed…shhh-don’t tell)

  20. I happy we have a little sun today, but I’ll be singing from the hills Julie Andrews-style when we start pushing 70 degrees!

  21. Oh yes that sickness radar hones in on the worst possible times! Drives me nuts. I got the swine flu 1 day after my wedding last year, it lasted 5 weeks, 3 of which i had no voice. those 5 weeks encompassed thankgiving and my daughters first birthday. NICE!!

    Glad you are feeing better!

  22. Caroline says:

Had to laugh at your comment about how Philly boys never leave….ain’t that the truth! Oh well…I will try and remember that the next time I am wishing I would have championed harder back in the day to get my Philly boy to leave and come to NY where I used to live! Wouldn’t have done any good! :)
