Holiday Gift Guide 2011 *with GIVEAWAY*

This year’s holiday gift guide is geared to the elementary-aged child, and every single one of the gift suggestions on this list is something that I purchased or was sent to me, so I have seen it, touched it, smelled it or licked it. (Okay, I didn’t lick anything. I SWEAR!) Point being, everything on this list is something I wholeheartedly endorse. I only accept items for review that I think we would love.

I hope you find some holiday gift giving inspiration with this list! This year’s gift guide is focused mostly on gifts for children ages 6 to 12 because those are the ages of the kids I’m buying for this year (for those new to my site, I have two daughters, ages 6 and 9, and a son who is 12) but there are some suggestions for younger children and teens as well.

Disclaimer: There are certainly affiliate links scattered throughout this guide, meaning that if you click over (usually to Amazon.com) and make a purchase from that site, I receive a small percentage. This is one way that bloggers help support the cost of running our websites and justify the time and effort that we put into providing content every day. We are all so very grateful if you do some of your holiday shopping from our links. Furthermore, as I mentioned above, I have received most of the items listed below in exchange for including them in this guide. And that, I think, will keep the FTC happy with me!

Finally, YES, there is a GIVEAWAY associated with this gift guide! Because who doesn’t love free stuff? Read to the end (or scroll down . . . I’ll never tell) to find out all the gory details.

Humble Pie is a holiday themed book centered around the virtue of being humble. In Rosie and the Pasta Garden, Rosie and Henry explore the virtue of imagination. My girls love these lyrical rhyming stories, and the iLight wands are the icing on the cake!

Steiff Soft Plush Toys | Ages 3 – 103, $25 – $125

Most kids I know are suckers for a stuffed animal, and Steiff is the standard by which all other stuffed toy companies must be measured. Handmade in Germany, in the same workshops where they’ve been created for more than a century, these stuffed toys are beautifully designed, ultra-realistic, and completely child safe. Many Steiff products become heirlooms that accompany a child all the way through adulthood. My girls fell in love with the horses, but there is a Steiff stuffed animal for every budget and to suit every child’s interests.

Little Miss Muffin | Ages 3 – 6, $15

Little Miss Muffin Dolls and her Muffin friends love to cook and have a great time making tasty treats in the bake shop. These whimsical little dolls are tons of fun for the preschool set. Visit the website to watch the video, and I dare you to get their jingle out of your head. Collect Little Miss Muffin and all her sweet muffin friends! They each come in a fashionable outfit that your child is sure to love. Each doll’s hair is individually rooted, so it can be brushed and styled. Their vinyl bodies have a soft vanilla fragrance, and they are 13 inches tall with blue sleeping eyes. Every Corolle doll is styled in France.

Storm Chaser Portable Weather Pod | Ages 5 & Up, $15

My favorite toys are those that provide an educational experience and make it fun to learn. Backyard Safari is a company who does just that! With this Portable Weather Pod, your budding young scientist can track and monitor rain, sleet, hail, snow and wind with ease. Use the weather vane to find out which direction the wind is blowing and the anemometer gauge to measure wind speed. The water gauge collects and measures rainfall while the temperature gauge shows you the current air temperature.

Backyard Safari Butterfly Habitat | Ages 5-12, $11

Another Backyard Safari creation, this lightweight Butterfly Habitat collapses for easy carrying and expands a full 16” to create an instant aviary for live butterflies. The easy-access closure lets you reach in and out without harming, or accidentally releasing, butterflies. A nylon strap with Velcro closures keeps habitat collapsed when not in use then doubles as a handle for carrying. My girls love bugs (seriously, WHERE did they come from??) and I have a feeling this is going to be a hit this Christmas!

KooKoo Fire Plumed Bird of Paradise | Ages 2 – 12, $25

This KooKoo Bird is a late addition, as I just discovered them, but I had to add them because they’ve been such a hit with my girls. These things are a hoot. The 6-inch plush toy comes with a mini KooKoo inside. Squeeze a KooKoo Birds’ belly and hear its KooKoo Kall. Give their bellies another squeeze and their KooKoo eggs pop out, and there’s another KooKoo Bird inside! Wow it’s Totally KooKoo! Heehee!

Happy Nappers | Ages 1-12, $19

I just want to say that’s one of the best disclosure statements ever. It’s amazing how many bloggers don’t disclose affiliate links… and before I was a blogger, I never even knew they existed! Great gift guide, I can think of a recipient for each of those toys (and the Kindle Fire looks amazing, right?!)

  23. Jennifer says:

My daughter really wants one of those muffin dolls (she’ll be 7 next month), but I didn’t see the appeal. I’m glad to see that your 8yo enjoyed it. Now I’ll think more seriously about getting her one.

We have used the butterfly habitat, as well, with great results.

  46. Mandy S says:

Im intrigued by the dolls styled in France. It makes them sound so special. But I’m most impressed with the fact that their faces are cute. Usually, I find dolls to be ugly (or at the very least, unpleasant looking) except for certain baby dolls. That was a pleasant surprise. :-)

Would be fun to add to that collection! My 8yo asked the other day, “Mom, do you think I’m too old for dolls? There’s one I still kind of want.” Broke. My. Heart!

    Great gift collection!

  96. Mary B says:

Thanks for the great suggestions! My youngest is 9 so I’m a little out of tune for the latest toys. I have a 4yo niece to buy for. Clueless…

  97. Love the Kindle…I use mine all the time they make great gifts and can be tricky to get this time of year. But the one that would be a big hit with my nieces? Steiff. Like Timex, they take a licking and keep on ticking…they last forever no matter how well loved they are.

  98. tweeted about your great list…which means someone else will probably win, but that’s ok, it’s Christmas, had to share it.

I am so looking forward to not having to travel on Christmas day. For the past 7 years, we have run around on Christmas day visiting all of our families. This year we decided to stay home…the kids will love not having to pack up and go right after opening the gifts and we will all be happier I think. Oh, and my daughter is obsessed with Little miss muffin by the way. She is only 2 but she points at it everytime she sees it anywhere!

  101. Shaun says:

My children would really enjoy learning with the butterfly habitat.

I’m most looking forward to watching the kids open their gifts from “Santa” on Christmas morning.

the DUB garage set would make a great gift for my grandson. I am very much looking forward to seeing family that I rarely get to see during the year due to living so far away.

  116. the illuminate sounds like such a neat idea. My 3 1/2 year old “reads” herself to sleep every night faithfully with a little LED flashlight. She’d be all over having a book that glows in the dark!

  117. I LOVE the KiwiCrate idea! The whole “gift that keeps on giving” and all…. Thanks for offering this!!

  118. I tweeted!!!

  119. Autumn says:

I’ve never heard of the Breyer brand of dolls before, either. That set looks so cute, and is going on my shopping list for my daughter’s Christmas gifts this year! :)

We have had the butterfly habitat the last two springs and we will keep getting it every year. The kids love it and it’s a great learning tool!

  122. MomofTwo says:
  123. There is so much in this Gift Guide that my six year old daughter would LOVE! I’m smitten with the Heritage Playset Princess Palace, the Breyer Pet Sitter Set, and the Corolle doll especially!

  125. Valerie Kite says:

What I am looking forward to most this year is spending Christmas with my in-laws. Though w see them a couple of times throughout the year, we have never spent it with them before. And our older 2 kids will get to go on Polar Express with granddad while DH and I stay home with the newborn for some peace and quiet. Priceless! :)

  126. Valerie Kite says:
  127. Everything on this list is so cool! I seriously want a Happy Napper for myself, LOL. And a Kindle wouldn’t be bad either. ;) This year for the holidays I am most looking forward to spending time with my fiance doing fun stuff like looking at Christmas lights. Thank you for the giveaway!

  128. Megan Sutliff says:

I’m so excited for Christmas this year because it’s the first year my daughter can really get excited about it and understand it! Hope to win this prize pack!

My nephews would love the Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympics for Wii and my son would love the CAT Motorized Bulldozer! I am most looking forward to the excitement of the children!

  133. Thank you for the giveaway. I am most excited about my son being able to open presents for the first time this year. He just turned one. I think my step daughter would love the wii video game.

I think the CAT Motorized Bulldozer would really be a hit w/ my 2 boys. They are 4 & 1. The Kindle Fire review was great. I didn’t know the recommended age started at 13, but w/ all those features, I want one for myself!
I would love to win. We arent going to have Christmas this year because of money struggles. Thanks so much for a chance to win!!!

  137. Leane G says:

I shared on FB: Leane Gonzalez :)
My boys would love all the gifts in the giveaway! Thanks for the chance!

  138. Lauren says:

my kids would LOVE those toys!!!!

  139. mandy says:

My two daughters would love pretty much everything on the list. THe EZroller looks like it would be an especially huge hit. Thanks.

  140. Michelle says:

My kids would love the butterfly catcher- although I suspect that more than just butterflies would find themselves in the container. Rollie Polies don’t stand a chance in our backyard – they get turned into ‘pets’ quite often.

  141. Amy Glasier says:

I’ve been eyeing up that butterfly habitat for quite some time, think my youngest would love it. And the new Mario and Sonic at the Olympics would be a hit here.

  142. Jennifer Marie says:
  143. Julie S. says:

We really debated asking my parents for the Kindle Fire this year. Ultimately we ended up with a Wii (I know, we’re the last Americans to get one, haha), as I’m thinking that subsequent editions of the Fire will be a little better/improved (after reading a bunch of reviews). I know – you can say that forever about technology, can’t you?? We’re late adopters anyways – hence the Wii. :) Of the other things you listed, the KiwiCrate membership sounds VERY cool!

  144. Corina S says:

We’ve been checking out the Happy Nappers, as my girls are big fans of Pillow Pets! What a great giveaway. This would be an awesome way to contribute to Toys 4 Tots program. <3

  146. Susan S. says:

I am a foster parent to 5 boys. They would absolutely love all of the cars!!! They would actually love any toy. Last year they received a paper sack with fruit and a stess ball. This Christmas will be different for them.

I have a little brother who I have been searching for gifts for. The guide was VERY helpful to this process for me. Then I saw the giveaway, which included some of the things I was thinking of getting for him. Wow, this would be wonderful to see some of these gifts. I was looking at the weather item earlier, but he has lately been so interested in his Wii, that the game was looking more ideal! Oh such decisions! I like the educational value of the Butterfly habitat too! I appreciate the guide and helpful ideas for this age range. My own children are younger, so this was good to get a perspective from a Mom of this aged group!
