Last week I mentioned that I am loving my new Sonia Kashuk Weekender makeup bag, and I had several requests for some photos of the bag as well as a roundup of the makeup I’m currently using. Since I aim to please . . . hear ya go!
Here are a few shots of the bag. Outside is this fun pattern, and it closes with a zippper. I only have one complaint; I wish it had a handle. Otherwise, it’s perfect for my needs.

Inside there are three sections. I actually made a quick little Vine video to show you!
The left side has 2 see-through plastic makeup bags. I put my eye makeup in the lower bag and my lip stuff in the top one. Don’t you love my technical terminology?

I love how they velcro in so you can remove them for easier access.

That middle piece that’s holding my makeup brushes flips like a book, revealing the 3rd compartment. That’s where I put my face stuff.

Yes, I actually use all of that!
Believe it or not, I used to be really low-maintenance with makeup. I could put everything I wore in one of those little clear zipper pouches that are in the front of this bag. But time marches on, and as the wise Truvy once said, eventually you realize it is marchin’ across your face. Truer words were never spoke, and these days it takes a lot more paint to cover this old barn than it did when was 25.
So here’s the breakdown!
(But first. I warned you that I’m a product snob, right??? Okay, now that we have managed your expectations . . . )
What’s In My Makeup Bag
Face:
Sonia Kashuk Priming Vitamin Serum
MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation
Jane Iredale PurePressed Base (yes, I use this on top of my foundation; on rare occasion I will use it by itself, but… the barn and all that)
Laura Mercier Secret Concealer
MAC Powder Blush
Eyes:
For eyeshadow, I switch around between two palettes I have from Laura Mercier, and I play around with my stash from Sonia Kashuk as well. If I remember, I use my Mary Kay eyeshadow primer.
For eyeliner, I sometimes use Chanel Stylo Yeux in black or Lancome Le Crayon Khôl in “Dark Coffee” which I smudge with my Laura Mercier smudge brush. (I love that thing.) I really miss my Chanel Stylo Yeux in plum. I don’t know if it was the “Violine” or the “Cassis” but that was my favorite.
TIP: I almost always apply eye liner to the inside of my upper and lower lids as well as on the top, in my lash line. It makes all the difference in the world. I started doing this after my Cosmo photo shoot; the makeup artist there taught me the trick. And then Sonia Kashuk mentioned it when she did our makeup tutorials.
Sonia Kashuk eyelash curler (I wasn’t curling my lashes before; I’m on-again/off-again with that, but I’m really liking this tool. It seems to be the right shape for my eyes or something, and it really gets all my lashes in there and curls them without kinking any of them funny like some I’ve tried.)
Hypnose Drama mascara (I have been having a love affair with Lancome mascara since high school; I will never give it up!)
Bobbi Brown Brow Pencil (another deal breaker; I buy these 2 at a time. I’m terrified to run out of it.)
And finally . . .
Lips:
I always use lip liner. My current favorite is Bare Minerals.
And I’ve been playing around with lipsticks and lip glosses from Sonia Kashuk and Avon. I also love my Chanel LÈVRES SCINTILLANTES. I keep that in my purse. The other item that I keep in my purse that I keep meaning to write about is my MAC Blot Powder. That stuff is amazing.
So there you have it. I know most of it ain’t cheap, but my experience is that the good stuff lasts for-ev-er. Some of those Laura Mercier palettes are a couple of years old. I do run through my macara pretty quickly but the rest of it lasts a good while. I don’t feel like I’m always at the makeup counter. And since I don’t tend to do a lot of experimenting, I don’t waste much of it.
I’d love to hear about your favorites, and if you have any bargain brands that you really like and think are a cut above, let us know!

Jo-Lynne,
That’s so funny that we like some of the same makeup; I love MAC foundation (I use the satin finish one, which is now discontinued, Studio Sculpt was too drying for me), and MAC powder blush and I also use the Laura Mercier concealer and the Sonia Kashuk eye lash curler. My go-to-mascara however is L’oreal Voluminous.
Estelle
I’ve tried the L’oreal Voluminous and it’s pretty good. But I always go back to my Lancome.
Interesting that you find that MAC foundation drying. I have SUCH dry skin, I don’t need anything drying!! I find that it goes on MUCH better over the Sonia Kashuk primer.
I’m curious about your Laura Mercier concealer. I LOVE her tinted moisturizer and currently use Mally’s concealer. I’d like to switch-I have to order Mally’s and I’d like to just run to Macy’s or Sephora when I’m out. Just hoping Laura’s concealer is as great as her moisturizer.
I have 3 young kids and a crazy job-I need all the concealing I can get! ;0)
Lisa
I really like it. It goes on nice and thick but blends in well.
I’m loving the understated elegance of your makeup collection! Jealous. I’m still working out of a makeup tower. I’ll need to check out this bag at Target. Thinking it would be good for spring and summer travel with my twins so I can bring enough to make me happy but not a separate suitcase or anything.
Thanks for showing it “in action” – I like that the organization is there but not with too many itty-bitty compartments.
I love make up so I loved reading this! So fun to see what is in other people’s stash
Here is a post from my favorite “beauty blog”- if anyone else is interested – http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/08/29/1566/
Thanks for the heads up! I just pinned her post. Very fun.
My cousin was telling me about the Jane Iredale. I really need try that.
Thanks for this blog post Jo-Lynne. I have been looking for a new foundation and concealer to try. My skin is dry also and finding a good coverage foundation that doesn’t dry out my skin further is a challenge. I also know that I can count on the products you use to be all that you say they are. The bag is cute too!
I had to come back and read about your mascara. I’m having a heck of a time finding one I really, really like. Also? I bought one a Sonia Kashuk bag to take to Blissdom that will hold everything.
That’s great! Do you love it?
I leave tomorrow and I haven’t even packed it yet. But I THINK I’m going to love it.
Plus with three other roommates it will help me stay organized better in the room than my usual Ziploc travel method. That was my main goal.
Definitely! I’ve always used Ziplocs before too. I can’t wait to travel with this!
