Stephanie had a list of questions about Blissdom.

1. Who did you spend the most time with at the conference?

I really didn’t hang with any one person or group.  In fact, this is what I loved most about Blissdom this year.  I felt like I really got to spend time with a lot of people.  I never sat at a table or ate a meal with the same group twice.  It helps that I know a lot of people, and I can pretty much walk into a room at any given time and find people I feel comfortable with.  Of course, there are still people I didn’t see enough of.  Which leads me to your question #2.

2. Who do you wish you could have spent more time with?

Oh so many!  There is NEVER enough time.  I kept trying to get together with Steph but it never really worked out.

3. How does Blissdom compare to other conferences/events you have attended?

I’ve only ever been to one other conference, and it’s not really a blogging conference; it’s a writing and speaking conference with a blogging track.  So I can’t really compare.  Blissdom was by far and away, from a blogger’s POV, the better conference.  But I enjoyed both for different reasons.

I’ve heard great things about Mom 2.0, but I have to pick and choose, and it was just too close to Blissdom.  I plan to go to BlogHer this year because it’s in NYC and that’s so convenient for me.

4. If you could improve the conference next year, what would you do?

The only improvement I can think of is to have some different speakers.  I feel that I heard a lot of the same people that I heard last year, and I heard this sentiment expressed by a few others.  But the speakers were fabulous, and I don’t want to take away from them in the least.  The location and the sponsors and the sessions were all excellent.  I just wanted to wrap it up and take it home with me!

The Low Down on Blissdom

Last year I talked Blissdom right into the ground.  I probably drove away half of my dear readers by the time I was done yammering about it.  This year I’m going to try a new approach — a one post recap, and it won’t even make you scroll forever.  I’m not quite sure HOW I’m going to do it, but this is my pledge to you.  One post, 500 words or less.  Starting now.

Highlights:

For one thing, I ate like a queen and didn’t have to wash a single dish for five days.  That right there was worth the price of admission.

Then there was my roommate, Rachel (on the right).

She’s a doll.  And she can function intelligently and manage to look beautiful on less sleep than anyone I’ve ever met.  I’ll try to overlook the fact that she kicked my trash in the Tastemaker competition, but together we swept the whole thing and we each have a trophy filled with spuds to prove it.

My Wisdom Workshop on Vlogging and Editing.  We got a lot of positive feedback, and I absolutely love the girls on my panel.

The hands-on Wisdom Workshop on Photography finally got me to switch my camera off the auto setting.  Now if I could just learn Photoshop.

I had more fun than I thought I would, once I got over my fear and trepidation of cooking in front of 150 people.   The ladies from Fleishman Hillard did a fantastic job putting the event (and the entire challenge) together.  It was smart and innovative and fun, and I hope to get to work with them again.  And also, they totally took care of those of us #strandedatblissdom in snowmageddon.

The session on Evolving as a Professional Blogger — The Evolution From Earned Media to Paid Media. (If I go over my self-imposed limit of 500 words, it’s because that title is a paragraph of its own.)  Seriously, if you have any aspirations to make this blogging thing into more than a hobby, run, don’t walk, to get yourself a recording of this session.  (I assume they will be made available on the Blissdom Conference website before too long.)

Breakfast at the Pancake Pantry.  Nuff said.

The Opryland Hotel was A-MAZ-ING.  When you have some time to kill, look through the photos on the Blissdom 10 Flickr group.

Is it wrong to say that getting stuck in Nashville for an extra night was one of the highlights of the trip?  Seriously, if I could afford the time and the extra room, I would plan an extra night in to every blogging event.  Having that time to decompress has been absolutely glorious.

Lowlights:

Um.  I got nuttin’.  Srsly.  I had a blast.  Alli and Barbara are rock stars.  That’s all there is to it.

Instead of going on and on about what I want to tell you, why don’t you tell me what you’d like to know.  Ask away, and I’ll answer in the comments.

My dear roommate Rachel was the Tastemaker winner, so big huge congrats to her, and thanks to all of my competitors and the folks at Fleishman Hillard and the National Potato Board for making this experience so much fun.

More later.  Sorry for the brevity.  Or, maybe I should say you’re welcome?

Hello from Nashville!

Well, I’m here, but who knows if I’ll ever get home.  I woke up to 2 inches of snow yesterday morning in Philly, but fortunately it melted before I was scheduled to fly out.  I fear my return trip will be much more difficult, with the storm predicted to hit the east coast on Sunday.  Nevertheless, my trip down was uneventful, which of course is a good thing when it comes to air travel.  I traveled alone, but I wasn’t lonely with Michael Pollan and Martina McBride keeping me company.

I packed a suitcase that was kindly labeled “HEAVY” with a big orange tag by the TSA officials, as the unfortunate gentleman behind me on the escalator last night can attest.  I rather unceremoniously dropped the suitcase on him when I somehow lost grip of the handle.  But it’s the South, after all, and he was gracious.  I, however, was mortified.

When I arrived at the Opryland Hotel, I knew to expect it to be massive, but y’all.  There is nothing to describe the size of this place.  I have walked MILES in the past 24 hours.  And there is a jungle in the middle of it all.

It’s very surreal, the blogging conference.  Of course, this is not my first, but it never ceases to amaze me — women I’ve only known online, women I know and love, women I’m meeting for the first time, all converging in one space.  We are women from all walks of life, all with different purposes for our blogs, yet we speak the same language.

You walk down the hall, and your eyes meet.  Does she know me?  Do I know her?  Should I introduce myself?  Should I know her name?

You see that rockstar blogger from across the room, and you feel like you’re rubbing shoulders with a celebrity.

And then there is that moment when you spot the woman that you vaguely recognize from her Twitter profile picture, but you know her so well.  You run over and squeal like a school girl and share a warm hug.

I attended three of the Wisdom Workshops today, one my own.  It went well, I think.  I was inspired to be a better writer at the Writer’s Craft session, and I learned some new tricks with my Nikon D50 at the Photography workshop.  Here are some of my practice shots:

Soon I’m headed back out to the Kick-Off Cocktail Party.  Lots of ladies have arrived this afternoon, and I’m excited to see who’s there and who I might find.  And the festivities continues.  TTFN.

Nightlife at Blissdom

Blissdom Conference ~ Nashville ~ February 4-6 2010I wasn’t going to post anything else about preparing for Blissdom, but I have had a lot of questions about the evening events and how it works, so I thought I’d just address them in a post in case others were wondering too.

First, it seems that a lot of people were unaware of the “pajama party” on Saturday night.  I was referring to the ‘COME COMFORTABLE’ MOVIE & GAMES NIGHT from 8:00 to 11:00 pm on Saturday night.  You can reference the Blissdom Conference Agenda for more information.  Last year some girls were in pajamas; I wore my favorite Aeropostale sweatpants and a hoodie.  It’s so nice, after two nights of dressing up for cocktail parties, to pull on your familiar comfort clothes and just hang out and visit.  So be sure to bring something comfy that you don’t mind wearing in public.

Here’s a reader question about the multiple events planned each night:

Are some people just skipping the cocktail parties for Tastemaker and such? Or going to both, or what??

The official Blissdom events are in the hotel, and they are listed on the agenda I referenced above.  There is a COCKTAIL PARTY both Thursday and Friday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

The Tastemaker Party is scheduled for Friday night from 9:00 to 11:00.  While it’s not an official Blissdom event, it is open to everyone, and I hope you will come if you’re going to be there!  You can view the invitation and RSVP for that here.

There will also be privately hosted parties off property, and some things are bound to overlap, so you will have to pick and choose, or try to catch a little bit of each if possible.  There will be groups of people going out to eat and to see the nightlife too, so just plan to go with the flow.  It’s a great time, I promise!

Check out my newest posts at Reviewsings.  Last week I got to sample a pair of designer jeans from Beija-Flor and a Winyah polo for kids from COAST.

It’s the age-old question: WHAT DO I WEAR?

When it comes time to pack for a blogging event or conference, the first thing I consider is what outfits I feel good in.  And then I think, what will I be comfortable wearing all day?

What makes you feel comfortable and confident?  Those are the outfits you want to bring. The last thing you want to do is go out shopping and buy a bunch of stuff that isn’t really you, because you think it’s what you’re “supposed” to wear.

During the day, you can wear pretty much anything you are comfortable in. Shop your closet.  You will see some people dressed “business casual,” but you will also see plenty of jeans.  You will most likely find me in jeans and a sweater. Here is a photo from last year of the day we arrived.  We were all wearing jeans and a sweater or top of some sort.  Lisa takes the cake with her “I’m cooler online” t-shirt.

blissdom3

You will also see some ladies in dresses and heels during the day.  It’s really up to you — what are YOU most comfortable in?  Go with your instincts.

If you feel like your wardrobe is a bit stale, consider adding some inexpensive accessories to pop your outfits. After all, the only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.

Quick.  Can you name that movie?

Pick up a cuff bracelet or some bangles at Target or Forever 21.  And long necklaces are all the rage right now.  Or there’s also the scarf.

For the evening, you will probably want to glam it up a bit. This year, there is a cocktail party both Thursday and Friday nights.  (See the agenda for all the deets.)  Friday night is also the Tastemaker party.  Be sure to RSVP!  These are the nights to bring out the dressy jeans or a slinky dress.

Last year I wore my trouser jeans and a sweater and red patent leather pumps. Here I am with my roomies, all dressed up and ready to paint the town red.  (Don’t ask me why we we’re partially beheaded.  And I have no clue what was going on with my hair.)

blissdom-fashion-photo

There were lots of slacks and dressy blouses.  And there were little black dresses and sexy strapless numbers.  Amy from Mom Advice took the prize though.  Look how adorable she was.  That dress is to die for, and I love how she dressed it down a bit with accessories.

You will also want to bring cute pajamas or sweatpants to hang out after hours.  Saturday night is the pajama party, and that’s the night to get comfy and watch a movie or just visit in the lobby like I did last year.

But before that, there is the final closing keynote and the Harry Connick, Jr. performance with a meet-and-greet afterward, so you’ll probably want to wait to put on your PJs until after you’ve had your picture taken with “The Vice-Chairman of the Board.”  But that’s totally up to you.

If you have any questions, I’ll be glad to answer them in the comments, but the most important thing is to be yourself and have fun!  Remember, a confident woman is a beautiful woman.

Advice for Making the Most of Blissdom

January 10, 2010

I know that the majority of you are probably not going to Blissdom, so I promise not to inundate you with Blissdom buzz for the entire month, but I’m getting a lot of questions about what to wear and what to expect and what to bring, so I thought I’d do a few posts with [...]
