It’s All About Me Me Meme!

what-i-learned-this-weekI am an ESFP.  At least I am tonight.  If I take another Jung personality test (hat tip to my good friend Melanie, who REALLY needs to update her blog), I am likely to be something else because I am wishy washy like that.  And evidently I can be rather wordy, which should come as a surprise to no one.  And it can take me a while to get to the point.  Really?  You aren’t shocked?

I thought this description fit me to a T so I had to post it.

“Where’s the party?” ESFPs love people, excitement, telling stories and having fun. The spontaneous, impulsive nature of this type is almost always entertaining. And ESFPs love to entertain — on stage, at work, and/or at home. Social gatherings are an energy boost to these “people” people.

SPs sometimes think and talk in more of a spider-web approach. Several of my ESFP friends jump from thought to thought in mid-sentence, touching here or there in a manner that’s almost incoherent to the listener, but will eventually cover the waterfront by skipping on impulse from one piece of information to another. It’s really quite fascinating.

New! ESFPs are attracted to new ideas, new fashions, new gadgets, new ______. Perhaps it’s the newness of life that attracts ESFPs to elementary education, especially to preschool and kindergarten.

ESFPs love to talk to people about people. Some of the most colorful storytellers are ESFPs. Their down-to-earth, often homespun wit reflects a mischievous benevolence.

Almost every ESFP loves to talk. Some can be identified by the twenty minute conversation required to ask or answer a simple factual question.

I mean, the storytelling thing?  SO ME.  That’s why I blog.

New fashions, new gadgets?  Oh yeah, now you’re speaking my love language.

And hello, I majored in elementary education.

Although I’m quite sure I’ve never taken 20 minutes to answer a simple factual question, PULLEEEZE.  *rolls eyes*

AND I have a river in Tibet I’ll sell ya.

What did YOU learn this week?  And while we’re at it, what’s your personality type?

New Years Meme

by Jo-Lynne on December 30, 2009

in It's All About Me Me Meme!

I wasn’t going to pressure myself to post every day this week, but when I don’t post, I miss you guys!  Funny thing about not posting, you don’t get many comments.  Since I have nothing worthwhile to say (not to suggest that even half of my posts are actually meaningful), I thought I’d dig up an old meme.

Doing a meme these days is sort of the blogging equivalent of wearing pleated pants or shoulder pads, but I always did enjoy a good meme.  Or even a mediocre one.  So here goes.  Feel free to play along.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
I spoke at a conference!

lysa-and-me

And then on this panel of distinguished bloggers.

bloggers-brunch

That was certainly a step or five out of my comfort zone, but I had such a good time.  And meeting the bloggers in that photo up there?  Amazing.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Yeah, so um, next question?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
YES!  My sister-in-law.  I can’t wait to get to Virginia and pinch those chubby cheeks like a crazy old auntie.  I’d love to post a picture of his adorable sweetness, but I haven’t asked permission so I’ll restrain myself.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, thank goodness.

5. What countries did you visit?
Oh, just Mexico, Norway, China, Italy, Germany, Morocco, France, Japan, and Canada.  And not only that, I saw them all in one day.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Besides a new car and a deck that actually reaches my back yard and a live-in maid?  Not a thing.

7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I don’t think there’s a date that was particularly notable this year.  How sad is that?  Or perhaps that’s a good thing.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
See #1.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Every single time I lost my temper with my kids and my husband.  Ugh.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
If I did, I’ve blocked it out.  This might be the first year in a long time that I can say no to this one.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Now that’s definitely the new sink and counters in my kitchen.  I still get a little bit giddy when I walk into the room and see them.

counters

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I always hate this question.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
At the risk of having apples thrown at me, I’ll have to go with the president on this one.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Probably groceries.  Fun, huh?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Besides #11?  This:

Disney-Castle-copy3

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
Unfortunately, due to the two wannabe teeny-boppers in my house, probably The Climb or Love Story.  I hear those songs in my sleep.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?
b) thinner or fatter?
c) richer or poorer?

Same on all counts, I guess.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Playing with my kids.

NOTE TO SELF: Finish this meme and go play a game with the kids.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Feeling down.  Last winter was rough.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Chillin’ at home.

21. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Sure did.  Thanks, Santa!

ring

22. What was your favorite TV program?
So You Think You Can Dance.  Loved it this year.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
No.  Hate is a waste of time and energy.

24. What was the best book you read?
I’ll go with In Defense of Food* because it revolutionized the way we eat, although now I’m reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma* and I think it’s even better.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day by Casting Crowns*  For sure.

26. What did you want and get?
See #11.  Oh and #21.  But more important than all that, I have a healthy happy family, and everything else pales in comparison to that.

27. What did you want and not get?
Nothing important.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
Probably Food, Inc.*  Not that it was particularly fun to watch, but it was informative and interesting, and I wish everyone knew what they’re eating and where it comes from.  Other than that, and keeping in mind that I watch very few movies, I’ll go with The Proposal*.  That was cute.

**UPDATE.  Shelly mentioned Julie & Julia, and I don’t know how I forgot about that one.  That DEFINITELY tops The Proposal, sorry Sandra.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 37, and I was at the beach on my birthday.  And that’s all I have to say about that.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not telling.  If I do, I’ll sound like a whiny brat, and I hate whiny brats.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Sweatpants rule.  Hey, just keeping it real.

32. What kept you sane?
I’ll go with the cliche, and say my faith in Christ.  But truly, he’s the only one who will never let you down.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I’m not particularly impressed with anyone famous.  Except perhaps Michael Pollan, lol.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
This whole mess over health care.  Although honestly, I pretty much ignore the news.  It only gives me angst, and I don’t need any more angst.  Oh, and Shelly also reminded me of the bailouts and the government controlling more and more.  Thanks a lot.  Jeez.  ;-)

35. Who did you miss?
My mom.  I wish she (or we) lived closer.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
I met so many awesome people at Blissdom and She Speaks, but the person I met this year who first comes to mind is Christie.  I mean, we “met” like three years ago, so she’s not really a “new person” this year, but we met face-to-face for the first time this fall.

christie-and-me

As far as truly new people go, I have to mention Shelly.  She is someone I’d love to meet at Starbucks if we lived nearby.  And I’m going to stop right there because if I keep going, I know I’ll leave someone out that I didn’t want to exclude.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
I learned so much about food, I don’t know where to begin, but I feel like I should come up with something more philosophical than “raw milk doesn’t make my stomach ache” and “whole food is where it’s at.”  But truly, while I re-learned plenty about people and relationships and the fragility of life, there was nothing that was terribly new.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

God is not dead, nor doth He sleep. (See #25 for the song reference.)

This short, but powerful truth sums up not only this year, but it pretty much sums up everything.  People fail us, sickness and death and strife divide us, but no matter what happens, God is on his throne.  He is not dead, and he doesn’t sleep.  I find this incredibly comforting as I see people struggling with grief and doubt and discouragement.  2009 has been good to me, but we don’t know what the future holds, so I cling to this truth and trust that no matter what 2010 has up its sleeve, my faith will remain firm.

Finally, don’t forget to link up to my 2009 Blog Recap Carnival tomorrow.  And leave a link in the comments if you do this meme so I can come visit!

Children’s Names Meme

by Jo-Lynne on October 5, 2009

in It's All About Me Me Meme!

Since I’m an old school blogger and I’m all for old school blogging making a comeback too, I figured I’d play along with Steph and Nell and do this meme. I miss memes. I always was a sucker for a good meme.

It’s about our children’s names.

1. Do you have any cultural or religious naming traditions?

Nope.

2. Did you or your partner come to the marriage with pre-selected names?

Nope.  Okay, so far this meme is a snooze.

3. Did you consider the sound of the first and middle and last names together? Did this make any sad eliminations?

Oh yeah.  I analyzed the sounds of the names to death.  I’m sure that’s no surprise to those who know me well.  I analyze EVERYTHING to death.

4. Did you have veto powers?

I pretty much had all the power, lol.  My husband could nix any name he didn’t like, but I pretty much came up with them all.

5. Did the baby naming cause arguments?

Not really, but we didn’t decide on my 3rd child’s middle name until I was in the delivery room.  My husband still doesn’t really like it, but how can you say no to your wife when she’s in labor?

6. Do you think it is easier to name boys or girls?

Neither.  I had a pretty easy time with all three.  Except the whole middle name thing with my 3rd.

7. Did you eliminate names because of people from your past or present who you don’t like or because a certain image comes to mind.

Um, hello?  I was a teacher.  That eliminates half the names in the naming books, right there.

8. Did you / would you survey your children to get their thoughts on the name?

Nah.  Although we did run it by them just for fun.  It was cute to hear them try to pronounce the names we were considering.

9. Did you tell people the name or possible names before the baby was born or were they “in the vault”?

Have I ever had an unspoken thought?  No, I have not.  We talked names constantly, and since we found out the babies’ sexes in utero (how do you spell that?  couldn’t find it on google), we would call them by name while I was still preggo.

10. Did you use baby name books?

Nope!

Drumroll please…What did you name your kids?

Unfortunately I keep my kids’ names private, although I’m dying to reveal them just this once.  Isn’t it a bummer that there are so many sickos in the world that some of us feel we can’t share our kids’ names online?  Of course, you all probably know the first letters of their names – DCR.

We call my son by his middle name, which is also my husband’s middle name and my dad’s first name.  My son’s first name is my husband’s dad’s first name.  Got all that?

My girls weren’t named for anyone.  I just chose names I liked.

Because my name is so unusual, I was determined to name my kids ordinary names that they wouldn’t have to spell their whole lives.  I pretty much achieved that, although both of my girls have names that can be spelled 2 ways, so I still end up spelling them from time to time.

Wanna play along?  Consider yourself tagged!

I don’t know about you, but May kicked my trash.  I woke up on Friday with a sore throat and body aches, and I told myself all day that I was imagining things.  I survived Saturday with a lot of Advil, and then Sunday morning I finally succumbed to the inevitable.  I stayed home from church to get some extra rest, but the daggum dog out back barked incessantly while I tried unsuccessfully to sleep.  I lay there for an hour envisioning various silencing methods, including but not limited to BB guns and cyanide.  I eventually just got up and came downstairs and made a pot of coffee — a more constructive solution, although no where near as satisfying as those swirling through my achy head as I lay in bed.

The rest of the day was dicey, and I finally took 2 Alieve and went to bed at 7pm, aching from head to toe and shivering with cold chills.  But this morning I’m feeling MUCH improved.  I almost feel like myself again.  Not QUITE up to unwrapping that Shred video that has been beckoning from my kitchen counter for at least a week, but better.

So this morning I got up and checked my blog (What!? Isn’t that what everyone does first thing in the morning?) to find out that the date on a bunch of my posts had been mysteriously changed from May to June (meaning that they had been posted and now they were somehow scheduled to post on the same day but in June) AND they were suddenly marked as sticky posts.  I checked my post revisions (cool WordPress feature) and there was no record of any post revisions after the date they were originally posted, so that rules out some mystery hacker (not that the hackers of the world don’t have better things to do than mess with the date stamp on my blog posts.)  I’ve gone through and fixed them, and I’m hoping my brilliant blog administrator over at DSW will know EXACTLY what is wrong and how to prevent it from happening again.  Well, it doesn’t hurt to hope, does it?

At any rate, that is what is going on with me this fine Monday morning in June.  Yes, I said JUNE.  How did that happen?  Anyone want to take a gander?  Here in Yankeeland, our kids have a couple more weeks of school.  I know it seems barbaric to some of you for kids to go to school in June, but that’s how I feel about going to school in August.  We still start after Labor Day, which is how civilized people do school.  At any rate, that means my kids and I aren’t quite done yet.  I still have a slew of end-of-year parties and events on my calendar, although thank HEAVENS no “graduations” this year.  Whoever came up with the cockamamie idea for preschool and kindergarten graduations should be drawn and quartered, I’m just sayin’.

And now it’s time to make something of myself, as my mother used to say.  I hope you have a glorious Monday!

I love pretty flowers.  Over the years I’ve tried my hand at various pots and planters, but I’ve never really loved the results.  I’m so particular that I can never create one to suit myself.  Every once in a great while, I’ll splurge and buy the ready-made ones at the nursery, but that’s SO pricey.

In recent years I’ve gotten quite lazy.  I don’t even think I did ANY pots last year.  I know we didn’t plant annuals in the flower beds.  I remember thinking that I didn’t want to bother watering them, so we just skipped it.  Can you say L-A-Z-Y?

This year I am determined that my yard will not be the poor neglected step-child of the neighborhood.  I’ve arranged for someone to come and help us in the flower beds, and I hung some petunias over our front porch.  I definitely want some potted arrangements by my front door, but I dread the effort of making them.  I’ve eyed the gorgeous flower arrangements at the local nursery, but the price tags are daunting.  I was THIS CLOSE to buying one last week, and then in a rare moment of fiscal responsibility, I thought better of it and drove home empty-handed.

Yesterday I decided that I need to make use of one of the many sets of pots stored in my garage and make my own arrangements, for better or for worse.  I drove to the farm market and walked around until I saw the prepared potted flower arrangement that I would have purchased if I weren’t feeling so industrious, and I made a mental note of the arrangement and color combination.  Then I went around and found each of the individual plants.  I even made a few substitutions.  I KNOW.  I’m living life on the edge.  Next thing you know, I’ll be jumping out of airplanes.

I came home, and these are what I made!  I am SO proud of myself.  I know they’ll look a lot better in a week when all the plants are in full bloom, but I couldn’t resist taking a couple of pictures to post this morning.

dsc_00021

dsc_0003

I can’t gaze at them for too long, or I start to note all of the flaws in my workmanship.  I could drive myself crazy with the I wish I’d moved that yellow one closer to the edge, and the I should have spaced those white ones out more, and on it goes.  But they’re done, and they cost less than half what the ones I copied would have cost me had I bought them ready-made, AND I love the combination of flowers and colors.

I’m so pleased with them, in fact, that I have a good mind to go buy more flowers today and put together a couple of pots for the back deck.  I think I have enough potting soil left over.

Well, not really.  But life sort of got in the way of ye olde blawg, and I don’t expect it’s going to let up this week.  This morning I woke up to my 6-year-old hurling herself into my bed exclaiming, “Mama!  This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for!”

“It is?” I mumbled in my groggy sleep-induced stupor.

“Yes!  It’s our spring break!  I get to be with you EVERY DAY!  Aren’t you EXCITED!?”

Alas, this is the dreaded much awaited Spring Break and the weather forecast couldn’t be more threatening.  In an effort to stay sane be a fun mom, we have plans every day.

And yes, I assured my daughter that I am beyond THRILLED to spend every waking moment with her this week.

woman-dishesFirst I have to get through today.  We are entertaining one of my husband’s colleagues from work, which I am happy to do because my husband doesn’t ask much and this is important to him, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t causing me a teensy amount of stress.  I’m just SO out of the entertaining habit.  I used to be a constant entertainer (not to be confused with consummate**!)  It was very casual, nothing fancy, but in our old house, we had people over ALL the time.   It was like second nature to me.

Nowadays, notsomuch.

Knowing I’d be home with the kids all day, I tried to get my act together yesterday.  I made this.  It’s an old favorite in our household.  And this morning, I made a cheesecake.  All I have left to do is make garlic bread and a vinaigrette for the salad.  And set the table and get the house in tip-top shape and keep it that way with three kids and their assorted friends underfoot.  AND make myself look presentable, which is a feat in and of itself.  All that by 5:00.

Piece of cake, right!?

Or, cheesecake.  HA!

** VOCABULARY CLARIFICATION

consummate – adjective |ˈkänsəmət
showing a high degree of skill and flair; complete or perfect

You know, as opposed to

consummate – verb |ˈkänsəˌmāt
make (a marriage or relationship) complete by having sexual intercourse

Just wanted to make that abundantly clear!

Fish Tales

April 4, 2009

I’m telling you, THIS is why I’ve lost interest in cooking beyond slapping hamburgers on the grill or whipping up a batch of pancakes for dinner.  True confessions: I am a Food Network addict, although I rarely make any of the food I drool over as the experts prepare it in their pristine kitchens with [...]

What A Difference A Day Makes

March 7, 2009

It is positively AMAZING what 65 degrees will do for a girl’s spirits.  Yesterday was gloomy and chilly, and we spent the better part of our morning at the doctor’s office.  Today it’s sunny and mild, and it didn’t hurt that I got to sleep in till almost 10am.  I feel like a new woman. [...]

Snow Days

January 29, 2009

Growing up we always prayed for snow days.  I mean, what could be better than a lazy day to sleep in, play in the snow, and drink hot chocolate? Then I became a teacher.  And I prayed for snow days.  I mean, what could be better than a lazy day to sleep in, linger over [...]
